I watch as she walks to the door, her hips swaying gently from side to side. I hold onto the thong in my hand, my mind racing with the implications of what she's just said.

Rook's warning, Luka's tale, and the desire for her all collide in my thoughts.

But one thing stands out: she's not just a prisoner. She's someone who wants to be free.

And I'm going to help her.

Chapter five

Aisling

As the night wearsto an end and morning breaks, I slip through the dim halls of Dreamland, my steps silent on the sticky carpet. The air reeks of sweat and sin, a scent that clings to the walls like a second coat of paint.

In the shadows of my room, Lark lies swathed in shadow, her breaths shallow whispers against the gloom.

"Star," she rasps as I approach, her eyes glinting like broken glass. "Hey."

She spent quite a bit of time this week in bed, nursing a broken rib and a head injury. Eddy, being the guardian fucking angel he is, let inonestreet medic--but that was all we got.

Other than that, it's just been me and the girls, watching each other's backs like we always do.

"Hey, Lark," I whisper, sitting down on the edge of her bed. "You doing okay?"

"Better now," she says, propping herself up slightly. "But...how long has it been?"

"You've only missed two nights," I tell her. "You'll be back up and dancing in no time."

"Good, because I can't risk ending up somewhere else," she says. "I keep hearing this rumor that they're sending omegas to some cult up north--"

I squeeze her hand. "Don't tell," I say, lowering my voice, "but we shouldn't have to worry about that much longer."

Her eyes widen. "You found a way out?"

"Working on it," I murmur. "We can't stay caged, Lark. Like...this shouldn't be the preferred alternative to whatever's waiting out of state. After what happened across the country, with the revolution and omegas running their own cities...? No. We can't let this stand. Not anymore."

"They're just too strong," she says. "Like--if my bruises are any testament to it--"

"But we're smarter," I insist. "What all these alphas don't seem to remember is that the queen is the most powerful piece on the board."

"So you always say," she breathes.

"And I mean it," I say. "Trust me, Lark."

"Well, I'm scared--but count me in," she says. "What's the plan?"

"I don't have details yet," I say. "That's actually why I'm here to get your thoughts...because I think I have two options but can only pursue one. The ball is rolling, and they'll know if I'm playing them both."

"Who?"

"I met someone from the Angels," I admit. "I told him I'll be his if he gets me out. We have...we have something special."

A smile ghosts across her features. "Oh yeah?"

I nod. "But there's someone here too--someone with more access."

"Oberon?" she asks, voice so low it almost blends with the dark.

"Maybe." I chew on my lip, taste the uncertainty. "He's Eclipse through and through, but there's something about the way he watches me..."
