"Sorry, sweetheart," Irving murmurs. "Got no use for a snooping omega when there's this much on the line."

For a split second, I see doubt flicker in the spooky guy's eyes, and he opens his mouth, making everyone in the room pause. It's fleeting, barely there, but it's enough. Enough for me to take a breath, to prepare myself to make a move—

Then the door bursts open.

Chapter ten

Aisling

Cold steel presses againstmy neck, a sharp promise of death. Caius looms over me, his breath hot, the scent of his cologne and the verge of an alpha rut almost enough to send me to my knees.

Damn my fucking hormones, my inability to fully control myself. I hate it...I can't breathe.

"Fuck...this is getting her off," Irving chuckles, coming closer and looking over Caius' shoulder. "Acting like a little lamb, but she's a freak. Omega slut."

"Go to hell," I spit out, my heart racing, but my gaze locked on his.

"Leave it be, Mr. Irving," Lianna says from where she's still sitting on the couch, watching with a bored scowl. "It's--"

She pauses, and everyone's eyes go toward the door behind me at the sound of a gun firing. My heart pounds, shouting voices making it clear that something is very, very wrong here.

The door suddenly swings open, slamming against the wall behind it. We all flinch, but Caius keeps the knife to my throat.

Insurance.

That's all I am right now.

Oberon storms in, a hulking mass of fury and blood-soaked strength. His shirt clings to his body, stained scarlet, the coppery scent reeking of fresh corpses. I somehow know exactly what he's done as soon as he comes in.

Those bodyguards are dead.

And soon, Oberon and I will be too.

"Get out of here, Star," Oberon snarls, teeth bared, fists clenched.

Caius turns, knife still at my throat, as Oberon advances. The air crackles with tension, a storm about to break. He's got a gun in his hand, and I go pale and still when he points it right at his boss's head.

"You're making a big mistake," Caius hisses, his eyes flicking between the blade and the intruder.

"That omega is mine," Oberon growls, moving closer, each step deliberate, powerful. "And you're going to set her loose...or I'm going to blow your brains out."

"Do you even know who I am?" Caius mutters.

"I don't particularly care."

Their eyes lock, two alphas caught in a silent war. I'm not sure if Oberon knows who's talking to...but he's about to find out.

"Move away from her," Oberon warns, his tone leaving no room for argument.

"Or what? You'll bleed all over my shoes?" Caius taunts, but there's a tremor of uncertainty in his voice.\

"Try me."

I feel the edge of the knife waver against my skin, a fleeting chance. With a swift move, I drop to the floor, rolling out of Caius's grasp. My chest heaves, pulse throbbing in my ears.

"Get her!" Caius barks, but his command falls on deaf ears.

Because I know for a fact now that those guards are dead.
