"Petrov, newbie!" a voice calls from downstairs. "Where the hell are you?"

"You called Rook," I sigh. "Of course you did."

"He'll help us figure it out."

Rook appears at the door, opening it up without invitation, and he finds us standing just beyond it. He frowns and looks from one to the other, then hears the shower and gives us a quizzical look. "Uh...what is going on here? If you two are debating showering together, I support it."

"Fuck off, Rook," I mutter.

"Easy, newbie, easy," Rook chuckles, shoving his hands in his pockets. "So it's somebody else in there. A girl? Because if it's an invitation to get some action, I'm down."

He can't scent her--he's a beta, and doesn't know she's an omega. Luka was right to invite him over, since it seems like the two of us are out of our heads for her.

"It's Finch's stripper from Dreamland," Luka says. "She escaped from the club, she's saying people are after her, and now we need to figure out what to do."

I watch the look on Rook's face go from bemused to startled to...well, really fucking annoyed. He scowls at me, crossing his arms.

"What did I tell you, newbie?" he says. "There's always a fucking catch with these girls. And now she's here, huh?"

"She's here," I confirm.

"So we need to get her back there before anyone knows--"

"No," Luka interrupts.

Rook raises his eyebrows. "So you're down for her too?"

"I'm not, but I think she's in danger," Luka says.

"She told me people are after her," I add. "And I don't get the impression that it's just the expected Eclipse goons. This is something else...something worse."

"Great," Rook mutters. "So even more reason to get her off our hands."

"She needs to be protected," Luka says.

"What makes you say that?"

He shrugs. "I have a feeling."

"A feeling," Rook scoffs. "Jesus, you heatsick shits. This is why you can't trust alphas when it comes to omega business. You do know that 'Angels' is just a gang name, not what we actually are--right?"

I shoot Rook a glare, my patience thinning. "She's not just 'business,' Rook. She's scared and hurt. We can't just turn our backs on her."

Rook rolls his eyes, clearly unimpressed by my argument. "Fine," he grumbles. "But if we're going to protect her, we need a plan. We can't keep her hidden forever."

Chapter twelve

Aisling

The leather of thesofa creaks under my weight as I lean forward, hands clasped tight around a cup of hot tea. Gunnar's eyes lock onto mine, urging me on, safe. Luka stands by the window, his silhouette rigid against the spill of neon from the city below. Rook perches on the armrest beside me, hazel eyes flickering with curiosity.

They're all here to help me. I need to remind myself of that so I can resist the impulse to run.

Unless they aren't, of course...but Gunnar is my lifeline here.

I don't have any other choice.

"Tell us what happened, love," Rook murmurs. "We're listening--and we don't plan on ratting you out."
