"They're going to take us back into the city," I say. "I have to run."

"It's no use," Luka says, gesturing over his shoulder. "I get the feeling they've had you staked out for a while."

My heart pounds as I follow the movement of his head to see a whole line of black SUV's in the parking lot, men in leather jackets with their hands in their pockets watching us. They're more heavily armed than we are--and we don't stand a chance.

We never did, I guess...they were just giving us space during my heat so Gunnar wouldn't go into a rage and get himself killed.

Rook gets out of the passenger seat of the closest car, frowning with a clear look of regret. Luka puts his hands up slowly, and Gunnar scowls as Rook gets closer. I hear footsteps behind us, and I steel myself for what I know is about to come.

"Sorry, newbie," Rook says. "But what the boss says, goes."

Black bags come down over our heads, rough hands gripping and pulling. Gunnar's hand is still wrapped around mine, holding me to him, and he snarls when they try to pull him away.

"Keep quiet," someone hisses, and I dig my nails into their hand when they try to separate us again.

"I'm not going anywhere without him," I snap. "Do what you want with us, but you can get fucked if you think you're separating me from Gunnar."

Vance Solace still wants information from me...and he'll do what I want if he's eager to get it.

I can't see, but I feel the press of a body against mine, pushing me into the backseat of a car. I smell clean leather and gasoline as the engine rumbles to life, doors slamming.

"Where are they taking us?" My voice barely cuts through the noise. Gunnar's hand finds mine in the dark, a lifeline I cling to.

"Doesn't matter," he says, squeezing once. "We stick together. We survive. Remember that."

The car speeds off, every turn and bump etching the route into my memory. When we stop, if we stop, I'll know which way to run. That's all I have right now–the will to keep fighting, the drive to survive.

Whatever comes next, I won't let it break me.

Nothing ever has...and nothing ever will.

Chapter twenty-one

Gunnar

The drive is tense.

Me and Aisling sit side by side, her hand in mine, the barest hint of light filtering through the black bag over my head. This is really fucking bad--we might be on our way to our deaths, if the boss is pissed off enough--but I try to stay calm for Ais.

"We're gonna be fine," I mutter.

"Not likely," Luka says from the other side of me. "Mr. Solace has it in for us after that stunt you pulled...and now I'm implicated too.Fuckme."

"You didn't have to help us," Aisling says quietly. "I'm sorry, Luka."

"Eh, we're in it now," he says. "Too late for regrets."

After what I think is about a half hour, the tires crunch on gravel. I don't know exactly where we are, but I get the feeling it's somewhere pricy based on how quiet it is outside--maybe even Solace's mansion at the heart of Celestial Hills. I brace as the car slows to a stop, hanging onto Aisling.

"They're going to try to separate us," I growl. "Stay--"

I'm interrupted when the door flings open, pinpricks of light coming through the bag, Aisling shrieking as she's jerked away. My grip on her slips and I stumble out of the car without thinking, lunging for the closest security guy--but pain rockets through me a split second later.

I don't know what's happening until my brain finally catches up and I'm on the ground.

I've just been tased.

I roll over, trying to find her again, hearing her retreating screams. I can barely move, but I still sit up, and that's all it takes for them to give me another jolt.
