“You say she won’t say where she came from or what pack she was in but have you asked her? The only thing I’ve seen is females being nasty to her. Of course, she’s not divulging her life secrets.”

“I haven’t asked her. She doesn’t talk to me. Have you, Blaze? Everyone saw you and the other Kings talking to her.” Second girl. The one with the blueish hair crossed and uncrossed her legs.

I blew out a breath. These girls were impossible. “I’ve talked to her but not enough to get her life story. Still, she doesn’t deserve to be called a murderer when she isn’t one.”

“How do you know?” the first one asked. I didn’t know their names and honestly, the way they were bashing others, didn’t want to know them or their names.

I didn’t have an immediate answer other than a feeling. I certainly wasn’t going to give these females any other ammunition against Karelis. “I know. I saw her that night in passing.” Shit. I might’ve done it anyway. “She was in her room. That’s what I know.”

“But her wolf…”

Rage bubbled inside me as I spoke, but I was able to quell it. My wolf ignited with fury. How dare they accuse Karelis of murder. How dare they even speak her name. How dare they talk about my m… Nope. Not going there yet. Karelis had secrets. Don’t ask me how I knew that, but I did. “You really should shut up about things you don’t know about. Gods, doesn’t anyone come here to fucking study?”

I got up and grabbed my bag, stomping toward the back where a table would be free. There were corners of this library where people went to fuck and make out, but there were cameras in the east wing. Everyone knew the places they couldn’t capture, and so that’s where they went.

Maybe now I can get something done.

Chapter Twenty-One

Karelis

With a shiny pass in my hand, I made my way across campus to the library. I hadn’t been there before and, as someone who once called herself an avid reader, I was giddy thinking about all the treasures it might hold. More than anything, I needed a change of scenery. The classrooms all looked the same, and the dining room was the same place, different menu every day.

I was also a bit hopeful that the library might hold some keys to learning more about myself. My head wasn’t so big that I thought I was the only shifter in existence ever in the history of our kind to have more than one wolf inside her.

In fact, I was sure of it. The Light Kingdom seemed to already have a plan once they realized that I had not one but two wolves and one of them was downright demonic.

Not demonic. A warrior spirit.

My knees buckled, and I sucked in a breath at hearing her speak so loudly. Yeah, she and I conversed mentally, but it was more like images and one-word thoughts from her to me. This was…something else.

“No dawdling, Ms. Sol. Move it or lose that pass.” Ms. Hollis was everywhere. There wasn’t a hallway that was safe from her supervisory glare.

“Yes, ma’am,” I called over my shoulder, already moving it. I wrapped my arms tighter around my chest and pulled the hood of my uniform coat up, trying to defend myself against the chill. With the high buildings around here, the common area became a holding ground for winter. It sat there, swirling in the center of the school, freezing all who dared to cross it.

I pulled open the huge, dark wood doors and went inside. A breath of relief left me as I was instantly comforted by thewarmth here. There were tons of students, despite the pass rule. I’d only gotten a pass because I got a ninety on the shifter history test. June had gotten an eighty-eight and was only two points shy of getting her own. She pouted a bit but encouraged me to use mine since she knew I was getting a bit stir-crazy in our dorm room.

Some of the students looked up as I walked toward the study tables, but there was no seat empty even if I did want to attempt to join them. Which I didn’t. Their glares and scents put off a do-not-approach vibe that had both my wolves snarling.

I walked through the stacks, perusing the titles and noticing that all the books were older. Perhaps it was the section I was in. They were all leather or older cloth covered with embossed titles and spines. I was afraid to touch them, they looked that antique and fragile. Once I made my way to the other side of the library where the students hadn’t congregated, I spotted an empty table with the green and gold desk lamp already lit.

I rushed over to it, excited that I’d found a spot to study when I came around the corner and noticed that not all the seats at the table were taken. Shit. It was Blaze. I would recognize those broad shoulders anywhere. Whirling around, I steeled myself and began to walk away when I heard him call out. “Karelis. Where are you going?”

Shit. First, I was trying to keep my distance since a mate or mates wasn’t in my future and two, there was absolutely no studying that would be done in his presence.

“I was going to find another table to study at. You look busy.” Wasn’t a complete lie. He was studying awfully hard or looked like it with that crinkle in his forehead deeper than ever.

“There’s plenty of room at the table. You’re not disturbing me.” Blaze got up and walked around to the chair opposite him and pulled it out.

Gods, there were still gentlemen in this world? I reached outand stabilized myself on the bookshelf next to me. “Oh. Thank you.”

I sat down and pulled out my books. At the very least, I would try to look like I was studying and make sure to keep tabs on my drool.

“Rogers, huh?” Blaze read my pass. “If you get good grades on the first three tests, he will give you a semester-long pass. He doesn’t advertise it, but he does.”

“Thanks for the tip.” The longer I sat there, the more I became at ease. “I was glad to get this one. The dorm room walls were closing in on me.”

A chuckle came from deep in his throat, and I swore the sound reached out and fingered through my ribs, warming my chest with its gravelly bass. “Those freshmen dorms are no bigger than cubicles. I remember those.”
