Page 27 of Her Temptations

Rowan turns away from us and focuses her attention to our professor as he starts to go on and on about the homework I completely forgot to do. It’s hard to focus, mainly because Rowan’s breasts look fucking amazing in that shirt, and because she smells so fucking good. It’s something new this time, a sultry scent I can’t quite place but that puts me on edge. My dick pulsates hard under the table, growing as the class drones on. I can barely stand it, being so close to her. I’m not sure I’ll survive the rest of the class, let alone the rest of the semester, being so close to her.

Finally, after a painstaking, dreadful fifty minutes, time is up and the lab ends. Bryce and Dereck gather up their things and wait for me, but I hang back because Rowan does, carefully putting her things away in the backpack. I nod at Bryce and Dereck to go ahead without me. Both of them hesitate, but only for a moment, then Bryce walks away, and after a few tense seconds, Dereck’s jaw tightens and he follows.

Rowan and I are two of a mere handful of people left, and she pretends not to notice me hovering by the door as she finally zips her backpack and secures it over her shoulder, heading for the exit.

“You forgot your boyfriends,” she says, passing me without slowing. Her tone is snotty, but I catch that same hint of an insecure tremble in her voice. “Aren’t you three always together?”

“Basically.” I follow her because, for the first time in my life, I don’t know what else to do. Rowan’s demeanor is in the process of changing, even if it’s hard for her, and honestly, I don’t know how to approach this new girl. She’s suddenly confident; dare I say … cocky.

It’s hot. I like it.

“Is there something I can help you with, Matthew?” Rowan says as she walks. My eyes are on her ass as she moves, hips swaying back and forth to a beat only she can hear. I want to wrap my hands around her waist and never let her go.

“I think you know what I’m doing,” I tell her. Rowan doesn’t stop, she doesn’t even slow down. I don’t mind. If she’s playing hard to get, she’s playing it with the master.

“You’re following me,” Rowan says over her shoulder. “Or are you stalking me?”

“I guess it depends on what exactly turns you on,” I say with a smirk. Rowan finally slows until she comes to a complete stop in the middle of the empty hallway, turning to face me. I’m pleased to see that her cheeks are tinted red, and those green eyes glow like emerald fire. She’s chewing on her lip, and oh my God I want to take her, right then and there, in the middle of the floor in a public place.

I want to make her mine.

“What makes you think that after what happened with Dereck and Bryce, I have any interest in you?” She tilts her head to the side like a curious animal, and my heart skips a beat. Once again she sounds so confident, so sure of herself, but two can play this game.

“Because you haven’t been with me yet,” I say softly, taking a step in her direction. When she doesn’t automatically move back, I take another step until we’re less than a foot apart. Her eyes drop for a moment, but just briefly, before she’s challenging me again, raising her chin in the air.

“And you’re special in what way?” she murmurs, so soft that I can barely hear her.

“Baby, I’m special in ways you’ve never dreamed of.” I lean in closer, until I can smell the Spearmint gum she’s chewing and catch the subtle scent of coconut in her hair. My hand reaches in her direction, and Rowan doesn’t shy away.

“You were it, you know,” Rowan says suddenly, and a tight edge tints her voice. “You were the guy every girl wanted in high school, including me. Do you remember that, Matt? Do you remember pretending to be interested in me just so you could make fun of me?” She lets out a shuddering sigh that vibrates her whole body, as though she’s trying to shake off those bad memories. “The party, remember that? Do you remember that party?”

“Yes.”

“Good. That’s good, Matt, because I do, too.”

Right as my hand is about to meet the soft skin of her neck, footsteps clatter around the corner and a group of students thunders past us, laughing and joking and effectively shattering the mood. Rowan takes a step back and so do I, reeling. She opens her mouth to say something, but at that moment another person comes around the corner. This one, however, stops right by her, his eyes on me.

“I’ve been looking for you,” he says to Rowan, eyes still scoping me out. “I thought we were going to meet in the library?”

“Um, yes, we are,” Rowan says, and the fire on her face is obvious now. Her confidence is shaking.

So is mine.

“Hey,” the guy says, offering his hand to me. “I’m Jason, Rowan’s boyfriend.”

I don’t shake his hand. I only smile at him until it falls back to his side, because if I don’t smile, I’ll probably bloody this dumbass guy’s face until he resembles nothing more than a smashed melon.

“Boyfriend,” I repeat, rage sizzling just below the surface of my skin. I fight hard to keep my voice steady as I turn to Rowan. “You’re quite the popular one, aren’t you?”

“You know what, Matt? Fuck you.” If I thought she couldn’t flush any redder, I was wrong. Her eyes cast to the floor and she mumbles something I can’t make out to Jason as he takes her hand and kisses her cheek. The entire time he does this, his eyes are on me.

A personal challenge.

But I don’t care.

I don’t care about him.

Nothing will stand in my way, especially not this fucking guy.

“I guess I’ll see you around,” I say to Rowan, ignoring Jason completely now. “Have fun at the library.”

Before either of them can say anything else, I wink and then turn around and walk away, unable to keep my lips from curling into a smirk. Jason is all wrong for her. He’s the douchebag. And within time, she’ll figure that out.
