“Could only be five months” Maryellen says with a smile on her face.

“Seriously?” She hits her mate, “You and your fifteen months gestation!” The Senior Council smirks. “Don’t laugh, I hear you have a human mate! I feel sorry for her.” I notice that Yaretzi smirks then. “But I digress, have any of these slaves been fertile? Have you even done studies? Is there a rise in the number of hybrid younglings being born in the Federation?”

“We don’t know, Lady Elizabeth,” the Senior Council speaks. “We have not noticed populations rising in any significant way.”

“So,” our human spokesperson continues to argue, “Smugglers are selling these humans with a promise of fertility and there isn’t any proof of breeding success among unmated humans? So, they are swindlers and the humans are not their only victims.”

“It would appear so,” Cat faced councilmember states, “Studies should be done and, in the meantime, we should allow our ships to patrol in Solar System J2695 in stealth mode to discourage trafficking of Human females. We should, also, study the humans who have mated to see if they all become pregnant or only those mated to certain species… As an aside, Commander Max, congratulations. Your mating gives our species hope of survival.”

“But Councilmember, sir,” Cara starts. “How can it give hope if you won’t let humans be a part of this Federation y’all are proud of?”

“That is a good question, female, and we will need to study this issue thoroughly. However, we can still celebrate the successful mating of my cousin.” Oh, Maryellen looked a bit shocked by that announcement.

The council members continued to argue about what, if anything was needed in our sector of the Universe, as well as the need for fertile females.

I hope they aren’t going to start letting those creeps abduct women. I am worried about what desperate males might do to keep their species alive.

They won’t stoop that low, Tan assures me. At least, most won’t. Obviously, some of our member worlds are not truly honorable.

The council came up with a resolution to study the matter of human compatibility with the various member species while allowing a battlegroup to patrol Earth’s solar system and surrounding space for illegal activities by member species. Only two members voted against the resolution… Kind of easy to guess, huh? … Yep, the creepy guy and the bug bitch…

Chapter Twenty-Six

Tet

Tan and I sit with our fathers after the council meeting. We have brought our mate back to our quarters, only to find our mother there ready to swoop in and take our mate away.

“Have a nice chat with your fathers, my dear boys!” she cheerily calls as she takes our mate off to who knows where. Both Tan and I made an attempt to grab our mate away from our mother when my father, Fade, put his hand on my arm. He sighs then says, “Your mother will not allow any harm to come to your mate.”

“No, your mother is fierce in protecting her young and she has made it clear to all that your Kelsey is hers.” Father Fenn says with a whimsical smile.

“Mother, is so wild and you are so disciplined…” I ask. “How do you keep your sanity?”

My fathers both laugh. Father Fenn says, “It took time for her to beat our heads together enough to realize that we need to just love and trust her. She knows the boundaries and has never passed them, but she will do what she feels is the right thing to do.” Father Fade nods his head. Tan is so much like Fade who doesn’t talk much. Fenn continued, “Your Kelsey was very disciplined at the Council meeting. I could feel her frustration at the slow-witted behavior of some council members, but she stayed poised throughout” My chest puffed up at the words of my father.

She really was very well behaved at the meeting. Tan is surprised at the reminder of what transpired at the meeting.

“My mate is not usually so controlled.” I admit, “I am grateful that she didn’t go after the H’Atari council member. I was surprised to see a female representative from H’Atar.”

“Yes, well, H’Atar has seemed to have a dearth of males lately, since the Galactic Federation forces took out all the An Ratha males at Gaerin’s wedding celebration. Most of the males have just disappeared.” My father seems to be insinuating that the An Ratha’s were more than just a crime family on H’Atar.

“I had heard there have been some attempts at mixing H’Atari with other races.” Tan states, “Don Gaerin showed us that they had been successful in creating a mixed breed. Of course, it required genetic manipulation for success. Well, for the males. Our sources say Non-H’Atari females tend to die in labor. Probably why they are very quiet about their attempts.”

This surprised me, I never heard this. Where did you hear this?

I read the briefings that were sent by the Intel Corp, Tan responded matter of factly. Didn’t you read them?

I felt guilty, as I was used to Tan telling me the important details… Not the best practice, I am learning. I must of missed that briefing.

What is it our mate says? OK, Buddy, I believe you. Tan winks at me. He caught me.

Suddenly, all of us look at each other, Tan and I feel a sharp tremor of fear in our bond with Kelsey. ,

Ah, fuck. Not again. Then darkness. Our fathers are looking at us.

“Your mother and mate are in danger. A riot has broken out in the Shopping District,” Father Fade states. “She says they have been separated from the guards and your mate has fainted.”

Tet and I look at each other. “That isn’t usual for our mate and her last thought suggests she didn’t just faint,” I explain as we run out of our quarters with our fathers right behind us.
