Logan glanced away from the road long enough to narrow his eyes slightly at her. “Abby, what is it? You look like you’re about to cry.”

“I am.” She swallowed convulsively and bit her bottom lip. “I want to go back to the apartment.”

Logan pulled over and cut the engine. “Abby, what’s wrong?” he asked solicitously.

Abby got out and leaned against the side of the car. The blood was pounding wildly in her ears. She hugged her waist with both arms.

“Abby?” he prompted softly as he joined her.

“I tried to tell you on Monday evening,” she said. “I even went to your office, but you had some stupid meeting.”

He didn’t argue with her. “Is this about Tate?”

“Yes!” she shouted. “I went to the zoo with him yesterday. All week I’ve felt guilty because I know you don’t want me to see anyone except you.”

Abby chanced a look at him. He displayed no emotion, his eyes dark and unreadable. “Do you want to continue seeing him?” he asked carefully.

“I like Tate. I’ve liked him from the time we met,” Abby admitted in a low whisper. “I don’t know him all that well, but—”

“You want to get to know him better?” His eyes seemed to draw her toward him like a magnet.

“Yes,” she whispered, gazing up at him.

“Then you should,” he said evenly.

“Oh Logan,” she breathed. “I was hoping you’d understand.”

“I do, Abby.” He placed his hands deep inside his pants pockets, but then opened the passenger door.

“Where are we going?”

He looked mildly surprised. “I’m taking you home.”

The smile that touched the corners of his mouth didn’t reach his eyes. “Abby, if you’re seeing Tate, you won’t be seeing me.”

Shocked, Abby stared at him, and her voice trembled slightly. “What do you mean?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” Logan turned toward her. His eyes had darkened and grown more intense. There was an almost imperceptible movement along his jaw. “Remind me. How long have we been dating?” he asked, but his voice revealed nothing.

“You know how long we’ve been dating. About a year now. What’s that got to do with anything?”

Logan frowned. “If you don’t know how you feel about me in that length of time, then I can’t see continuing a relationship.”

Abby clenched her fist, feeling impotent anger well up within her. “You’re trying to blackmail me, aren’t you?”

“Blackmail you?” Logan snapped. He paused and breathed in deeply. “No, Abby, that isn’t my intention.”

“But you’re saying that if I go out with Tate, then I can’t see you,” she returned with a short, bitter laugh. “You’re not being fair. I like you both. You’re wonderful, Logan, but…but so is Tate.”

“Then decide. Which one of us do you want?”

Logan made it sound so simple. “I can’t.” She inhaled a shaky breath and raked a weary hand through her hair. “It’s not that easy.”

“Do you want Tate and me to slug it out? Is that it? Winner takes the spoils?”

“No!” she cried, shocked and angry.
