“I parked out front,” Asher said, whizzing past me and reaching the door in what seemed like only a few long strides. “If they haven’t towed me.”

He laughed at that, but he was already fishing a key fob from his pocket. He pointed it at a fancy SUV in front of us, which promptly beeped. Then he rushed around the front of his SUV toward the driver’s side.

I assumed he expected me to get in on the passenger side. Not that he wasn’t a gentleman, but opening my passenger doorprobably would have been a little too personal. If nothing else, this man would keep me at arm’s length. I had a feeling he treated everyone that way, even his own relatives.

“This is a big deal,” Asher said as I fastened my seatbelt. “I need you to promise confidentiality. In fact, you can’t even tell Janelle. No one.”

He punched the gas pedal and sped out onto the street that ran in front of our building. I gripped the door handle. Why didn’t it surprise me one bit that this man drove fast? He moved through life at lightning speed. Why would he be cautious where driving was concerned?

“You know you can trust me,” I said.

Did he know that? What would he do if I reached over and put my hand on his thigh right now? Fire me, no doubt.

I would never do something like that. I’d been saving myself for marriage since I first started noticing boys. But now that I was twenty-four with no serious relationship in sight, that plan seemed a little ridiculous. Especially since I kept having inappropriate fantasies about the man who wrote my paycheck.

“CyberSword,” he blurted.

I blinked in surprise and looked over at him. The word didn’t seem to fit into the context of our conversation.

“That’s who’s meeting with us in Eugene,” Asher said. “My buddy Thad was there pitching his new app, and he ran into this company that’s looking to expand into what we do. They were very interested in talking to us about a buyout.

Buyout. That word instantly turned my blood cold. Not that I hadn’t expected it eventually, but in a buyout, owners got rich and workers got a one-way ticket to the unemployment line. At best, they’d keep me around and cut my commissions gradually until I had no choice but to leave.

I liked my job. The head office was close to my apartment, and most of my meetings were within a day’s drive of home.Although if I could travel with Asher Layne, I’d do it every day of the week.

“Here we are,” my boss said, pulling up to the curb in front of my building. “I’ll wait here.”

He was in a no-parking zone, as he’d been back at the office. Guys like Asher didn’t mind a parking ticket or two. If they towed him, he’d probably buy a new car rather than deal with the inconvenience of getting it out.

Only once I was in the elevator did it hit me what was happening. I’d be spending more than four hours in the car with the best-looking man I’d ever seen. I just hoped I could keep my wandering thoughts under control. Maybe, just maybe, I’d stop seeing Asher Layne as a guy I wanted to get naked with and start seeing him as the very boring guy who ran my company.

I had doubts about that.

ASHER

Ishould have taken Janelle.

Janelle was a smart, totally capable professional, just like Sammie. But with Janelle, I wouldn’t be battling these constant inappropriate thoughts.

Was Sammie wearing a bra?

What color was her underwear?

How would her pussy taste?

Yeah, way inappropriate. And that all rushed through my mind before we were on the interstate, heading out of Pleasure Valley.

By the time we were checking into the hotel, I was exhausted from trying to think of anything but the light gingerbread scent of her. She smelled like Christmas, and I wanted to lose myself in her and stay there until January.

“Good evening, Mr. Layne,” the desk clerk said with a big smile. “I have good news. We’ve upgraded you both to a suite. I’m sure you’ll be more than satisfied with it.”

Sammie and I exchanged a look. “There must be some mistake,” I said. “I requested separate rooms.”

“Oh, it has three bedrooms, each separated by a door,” the clerk said. “Plenty of privacy.”

I looked at Sammie again. The suite would certainly be a luxury, and she deserved luxury. After spending more than seven hours getting to know my top salesperson, one thing had become clear. This woman was a hard worker who was happy with what life had thrown her way. That made me want to give her everything.
