“They’re going to bring me something later. Enough. I don’t want to talk about any of this, Rian. Let it go.”

“Not until you turn over and hear what I’m saying. You didn’t know this would happen. Hell, I would have followed the same route Jammas suggested. We thought he was our friend, Jase. Jase.”

“Stop!” I turned, growling as the pain nearly caused me to pass out. My chest and stomach were obliterated from the torture I’d been through and at the horror on Rian’s face, it cemented in even more. “I did this. Just…let it go. It’s done. The only thing that should be on any of our minds is finding you all a way out of here. Go to sleep, Rian. Sleep.”

Sleep.

Sleep.

“Rian.” My eyes flew open, and I eased myself free of Kody as I headed for my phone. Three missed calls. Just as I had suspected, my best friend’s number was on the screen. I hit voicemail, glancing over at Kody as she rolled to her back, burying half of her face under her bicep as she slept.

“Hey, Jase. I’m a few blocks from the house. I think…maybe someone’s following me. I’ve taken precautions and am headed towards the freeway. I called Warez and left a voicemail. I’m sure it’ll be fine, I just thought I’d give you all a heads up.”

The thundering in my chest left me shaky as I hit the next message and grabbed my jeans. I pushed my legs in, rushing from the room as Rian’s voice filled my ear again.

“Jase, I was right. I’m definitely being followed. I’m headed out of the city at an insanely fast speed. They’re right on my ass. I can’t get ahold of Rush either. Where the fuck is everyone?”

I hit the next message racing to my computer to pull the tracking on Rian’s phone.

“Jase! Jase, they got me! Motherfuckers ran me off the road. I…I’m bleeding. I think I’m hurt pretty bad. Fuck. I’m trapped. I can’t get out of my car. They’re coming. They’re fucking coming, Jase!”

The line went dead as adrenaline slammed through me. I hit Rian’s number, cursing as it went straight to voice mail. The computer was still loading as I called Rush. Three rings sounded before a groggy voice answered.

“Are you fucking kidding me? Do you know what time it is?”

“Wake the fuck up,” I exploded. “They got Rian. Get Tiffany and get your ass over here right now.”

Crashing sounded in the background.

“Did you say they got my brother?”

“Yeah, I did. They ran him off the road. I’m running his coordinates now. Rush…this is bad. Really bad. I’ll tell you more when you get here. Come packing and ready. Bring everything you got.”

Chapter 36

Kody

It wasn’t the talking that awoke me. I heard words far off in the distance, but it was my arms being free and a shirt being pulled over my head that startled me from the dream. At first, I thought it was just Jase talking to one of the agents, but the fear in his voice sunk in, and I suddenly knew something was wrong and that it was me that he was talking to.

“Baby, open your eyes. I need you to hear this.”

Light broke through, and I squinted as Jase pulled me to a sitting position. I blinked, my pulse skyrocketing as his large hands held to the sides of my face.

“I don’t know how long I’m going to be gone. Dominguez is outside and you’ll have Tiff. You know the rules: no ordering out. We have enough food here to last a good week or two. If you don’t know someone, don’t you dare fucking let them through the front door. Even with Dominguez outside, I want that door locked and the alarm set, do you hear me?

“Wait, slow down. Hold on.” I cleared my throat, grasping Jase’s wrists as I tried processing what he was saying. “Where are you going? What’s happening?”

Terror. The haunting look in his eyes had me holding tighter.

“Rian. He left a few voice messages.”

“He was the one calling…”

“Yes. They found him, Kody. Those motherfuckers ran him down causing him to crash his car. I have the coordinates of his phone, but they’re not moving. They either took him or.” Jase stopped, pulling me in to tightly wrap his arms around me. “I have to go and find him. Rush should be here any minute. Tiffany’s going to stay with you.”

I pulled back, meeting his eyes.

“What will you do? You’re going to the location, but what if he’s not there? What if you can’t find him?”
