“Hmm. I don’t like to lie.”

“So, tell me the truth.”

“You first. When you were calling out to me, was it really to see if I was there? Or was it something else?”

I did stop then. He wanted honesty, and I wasn’t sure I could give it. I wasn’t even sure if I knew.

“Ooh. That look. You’re trying to figure it out yourself.”

“You can see me? How? I don’t understand. Are you following me?”

“See the intersection? You see that camera mounted there?”

I squinted, cocking my head.

“Look across the street. Do you see that electronics store? The one with all the TV’s in the windows?”

“Yeah. They’re huge. It’s a football game playing.”

“Is it?”

The pictures flickered, and I was suddenly standing there looking at myself. I was on every TV in the windows.

“Oh my God. Turn it off. Turn it off. You’re crazy!”

“You’re laughing. And running.”

“I can’t believe you just did that.”

“I can do almost anything. Are you hungry?”

“Are you asking me to dinner?”

He let out a sound. A sigh? “As if you’d go. I’m ordering takeout. I figure by the time you get home it’ll be ready. What do you like?”

I jogged to the next block, slowing back down as I hit the sidewalk. “Chinese. Beef fried rice. Eggrolls.” I paused through thinking. “An extra fortune cookie.”

“I’ll get you two.”

“J?”

“Yeah?”

“The detectives called me yesterday to tell me about David. They went through his house too and…I guess it’s been handed off to the FBI. I know you probably heard. I didn’t say anything new, but what if they catch you?”

The line got silent. Too silent. I pulled my cell back, seeing that it was still connected.

“J?”

“They won’t catch me. Even if they did have a suspicion, that’s all it would be. Evidence wouldn’t exist for them. The results would never stick. So long as I have breath and the web, I’m safe.”

“Okay. Good.”

“Yeah—”

The way the word broke off sounded wrong.

“Are you okay?”
