“J? Are you okay?”

I shut the door, heading back over. “Yes. Sorry, I was just thinking.” I handed her the soda, stopping myself from heading to the bar.

“I guess I should show you around. You probably want to clean up before lunch is here, or maybe you want to just process. Alone.”

She stood, following me through the living area, towards the back. I gestured. “Balcony. There’s a pool, but it’s probably best you don’t use it until after you’re healed.” We headed into the hall. “Gym.” I waved towards the glass door and walls as I headed down. “Office. It’s an extra so feel free to use it if you want. I think the stationary is in the top drawer. Sometimes, I notice you write.” I stopped outside the next door. “Your room.” I stepped inside, flipping the switch. “It has an adjoining bathroom. Towels, a robe, everything you need is already there. You don’t have clothes yet, but we’ll get you some delivered.”

“Delivered?”

“Right. I know the whole, don’t ask, thing, but what’s your size?”

She laughed, shaking her head. “No. If you have an extra t-shirt and sweatpants, I’ll wear those and have this washed. It’s fine, really.”

“Kody, I don’t think you understand how long you may be here. I’m good—the best with computers, but if there’s no information I can find on this man, he’s a ghost to me. A real ghost. I can’t track someone who doesn’t exist. Not that I’m not going to try. I may get lucky. Facial recognition may come back within the next few hours, and this may be over by tomorrow, but he works with someone. I’ll have to find them too. We need to know exactly what we’re dealing with. You’ll be here awhile.”

“Can’t I just get clothes from my place?”

“No.”

“Not even in a few days?”

“No.”

“How about if we have Tiffany bring me some of hers? We’re close to the same size.”

My head shook. “It’s not safe.”

“So, I’m trapped here? For good. For a long time? Weeks? Months?”

Yes, there was that panic again. Her bruised face was going pale making the mixture of shades stand out.

“However long you want to live.”

Full lips parted as she lowered her gaze from mine. “I can’t just lay down and hide. I…I have a life to get back to. Not soon, but at some point.”

“And you will. I’ll find these people. It’s just going to take time. Relax. Don’t worry about the clothes. I have an idea on your size anyway.”

“Then add a size just to be safe.” She twisted her lips, walking into the room to lower her purse on the bed. Her fingers trailed over the silk comforter, and she slowly turned back to me. “Why can’t I place you? You have no pictures of yourself. You have nothing to give me an idea of who you are. Are you in hiding too?”

My stomach dropped and I took a step back before I could stop myself. She saw more into me than most, which only cemented my need.

“Only from myself.”

Chapter 14

Kody

I hadn’t meant to fall asleep after I talked with the officers over the phone. I’d only thought to lay down and close my eyes as I went over what all this meant, but the darkness was inviting. It lured me into dreams of large hands, and mysterious brown eyes. Blondish-brown short hair in the back, longer in the front. Unkept. Messy. I saw wide shoulders and a lean waist…a five-o’clock shadow and full lips.

Yes, Jase had the perfect lips. With his square jaw and powerful build, there was no way he wasn’t someone constantly sought after. The loose-fitting clothes couldn’t hide what he had underneath. Was he famous, and I was missing it? He had money, and lots of it. His car alone was probably worth at least half my apartment. And his penthouse? He was definitely someone important.

I let the thoughts filter through as I turned and curled more into the pillow. I was in and out, drifting and dreaming. Had I ever slept on a more comfortable bed? I was meant to be here. Right here in this jungle of silk.

“Kody?” I jumped at the slight pressure that cupped my bicep. “I’m sorry. The food’s here.”

“I didn’t hear you come in.”

The stare had me slowly sitting. I didn’t hear because he didn’t want me to. I couldn’t forget what he was capable of. Even if he had saved me.
