The door opened and Fay ignored me, standing as Thomas came in with the trays.

“Don’t you look lovely today.”

“Why, thank you.” Fay rushed to his side, following as he approached the table. “Thomas, I would like to talk to Master Carmelo. May I do that?”

The guard paused, glancing at me before turning back to Fay.

“I can ask him.”

“Will you, please? I’m getting a bit restless. I need fresh air. Sun. There are so many studies out on how stress isn’t good for pregnant women. What if I am? Should I have to endure any more stress than I already have? The stakes are pretty high if you ask me. I need this. I need away from him, from Aimon. He’s constantly arguing with me. All I want is a few minutes to unwind. Please.”

Again, Thomas looked between us as I rolled my eyes.

“I’ll go talk to the Master now.”

“Thank you.”

I wasn’t sure whether to bite her head off or laugh. “Snake.”

“Shark,” Fay bit back. “I’m learning from the best.”

“What if I want to go too?”

“Weren’t you just giving me a hard time about my dress? I want some time alone. You’re driving me crazy.” She picked up her yogurt, throwing me a look before reaching for her spoon. When she froze and slowly stood, I turned to look behind me. My grandfather was at the opened door with his guards, and Thomas was whispering to him. He nodded, saying something before Parker pushed him away.

“Well?” Fay headed around the table, meeting Thomas as he approached.

“Twelve to one you’re granted time in the garden. One to one-thirty, you’re allowed in the library. Two, if you wish you speak to him personally about any concerns.”

“What? He’s actually letting us out of here?”

“Not you. Only Fayette. You have no privileges.”

My teeth clenched. “It’s my kid if there is one. How does that not grant me something?”

“Because you are no longer the heir. Fayette is. At least until we know whether she carries a child.”

“What?”

“What?” I exploded over Fay. “She can’t be the heir. She’s not even blood.”

“Doesn’t matter. It’s the Master’s order and decision. We just obey them.”

“Absolute bullshit. All of it. I want out of here, too. Half that baby is mine.”

Fay snatched the muffin off my plate. “You don’t even want the baby. I was the one who put in the work. It wouldn’t even be a possibility if you had your way. It’s one hundred percent mine.”

“Enough.” Thomas continued pulling the lids off of Fay’s bowls as if she were royalty. As if she had no hands to do it herself. “Eat. Especially you,” he said, lowly towards her. “This afternoon we will accompany Master Carmelo to see your parents.”

Fay reached out, clasping Thomas’s wrist. “Really? You promise?”

“He just told me, himself. We will go at three. Also, your parents’ home is being taken care of for you. Their things are in a room down the hall. We can go through them tomorrow and bring whatever you want in here. Master Carmelo says that will make it feel more like home to you.”

Sorrow transformed her face as she nodded. “He was telling the truth. He didn’t forget. Yes, that would make things a little easier. I want my mother’s quilt. The one she made. She kept it on my bed.”

“It’ll be the first thing I have brought in. Now, eat. We have a big day ahead of us.”

I kept quiet as Thomas left. Fay was staring at her food in a daze, nibbling on my muffin here and there. As much as I tried not to let it get to me, I was pissed. Fayette was the heir? Fayette? How did that even happen? Was my grandfather so close to death and so full of hate for me that he’d give everything to a woman he didn’t even know? To George’s daughter?
