“I most certainly am not.”

His defensiveness had me pressing my lips together.

“Alright, I’m tired. I need rest. This baby takes a lot out of me. What do you say we call it a day and take a nap before the appointment?”

Charles’s brow wrinkled as he waved everyone out. It wasn’t until he stood that I saw just how weak he was. Shaking took over his body and he quickly sat back down.

“I think I may skip the appointment today if that’s alright. Maybe I am tired after all.”

“You need rest.”

I didn’t wait for him to argue. I stood, opening the door, and waving for Parker.

“Will you please take Master Charles to his room? He wishes to get some rest.”

“Of course.”

As he headed inside the office, I zeroed in on Thomas, keeping his words to heart. Stand straight. Shoulders back. No fear. “Will you get the car ready? I have errands I need to attend to before my appointment.”

There. No hesitation. Pure orders.

“Lady—”

“Is there a problem? I said I have errands to run.” I glanced behind me to see Parker helping Charles into his chair. “Master Charles won’t be attending my appointment today. He’s too tired. I need to see Aimon. Can we do that? Can you take me to him?”

Thomas followed my previous gaze, coming back and nodding.

“Since you asked; yes I can. He’s at work, but we can take you to him.”

“Work?” My smile was automatic. “How is that going? Is he enjoying it?”

Thomas went to say something, stopping before he did. “I’ll let him know we’re on our way.”

“No.” My hand shot out. “I don’t want him to know I’m coming.”

Thomas nodded, but not in a way I understood. “I’ll get the car.”

“Thank you.” I stepped back, turning to the office. Parker was pushing Charles towards me, slowing as they approached. “Much better. Rest time. I’ll see you for dinner?”

A smile came to his face. “Yes, dinner.”

He and Parker left, but I didn’t move until they disappeared into the elevator. After that, I had my jacket brought to me, along with my purse.

“Car’s ready.”

“Thank you, Thomas.”

The double doors opened, and I walked forward as I pushed my arms through the sleeves. I was anxious to see Aimon. I wanted to know how he was, and what he’d accomplished since being out on his own. Plus, I was dying to go home. If I could just sit there until my appointment. If I could relax in my dad’s chair and lay on my old bed…

“Are you alright?”

I slid in the car, wiping the tears. “I’m great. Happy. I get my sonogram today. I’m hoping Aimon might want to come.”

“I’m sure he would love to. Does Master Carmelo know anything about this?”

“Is it something I should have told him? I thought it would be okay. We all heard him tell Aimon we would be safe and cared for. As part of my self-care, I need the father there with me when I possibly learn what we’re having. Master Carmelo will understand.”

“Yes, Lady Fayette.”
