I laid my head back, flattening my palm against the rounding of my stomach. For being sixteen weeks, I didn’t expect to still be so tired. I could barely keep my eyes open. My morning sickness was finally passing, but the midday naps were not. And they were filled with the oddest dreams. Dreams of my parents. Ones of me and Aimon. Our lives resembled nothing like what they were. I missed them all so much. Sleep led me to them, but here I got the best of what I couldn’t have, and that hurt even worse.

“Fay? Lady Fayette?”

“Hmm?”

My lids cracked open, and I groaned at the stiffness in my neck. I was laying on Thomas’s shoulder, but not very comfortably.

“Dammit. Ouch.” I trailed off, moving towards the window, confused. “Where are we? Are we buying a car?”

“Aimon’s work.”

“…What? Aimon works here?”

“Yes.”

My eyes scanned the large building confused. Didn’t he have a fancy degree? Hadn’t he made connections despite his grandfather saying he couldn’t use the status of his name? People still knew who he was. Didn’t that count for anything? Maybe not. No one knew better than me how bad things could get once the wrong kind of news got out.

I didn’t wait for Thomas to explain or my door to be opened. I pulled the handle, looking at the expensive, luxury cars through the glass windows. I could barely take them in before a voice broke through.

“Hello, ma’am. Welcome to Cross. May I help you with something?”

Still my eyes searched the area. “Yes, I’m looking for Aimon Carmelo.”

The boy’s smile fell. “Who isn’t. Right this way; he’s inside.”

My heels clicked against the cement. Each tap was like another nail in my coffin. Maybe I shouldn’t have come. Maybe I should have called.

“Aimon, customer. Customer, Aimon.”

Light blue hugged to Aimon’s wide shoulders and chest as he turned to face me. Where he’d been smiling, it completely disappeared upon seeing me. I had to make myself not take a step back as he forced it to reappear.

“Thank you, Chris. Fayette.”

“Aimon, I’m sorry. I should have let you know I was coming.”

“No. No, it’s fine.” His eyes lowered to my stomach. Excitement, sadness, so many emotions flashed before they rose back to mine. “You look well. Beautiful. Are you here for a car?”

My head shook as he led me to an office.

“I’m not. I was looking for you.”

“Me? My grandfather let you come? Or…has he—”

“Oh, God, no. I’m sorry. He’s fine. Tired, but fine.”

“So, he let you come?”

“He doesn’t know.”

“Oh.” More emotions I couldn’t quite read. “Do you want to sit?”

He shut the door as I waved my hand. “I don’t. I was hoping you were home. I really wanted to stop by and see my parent’s house again.”

“I don’t usually get off until seven. You can come by then if you want.”

“I’m not sure I can.”

“I didn’t think so.” He paused. “Was there anything else?”
