My hand settled over my belly as he pulled at his tie. “Yeah. I have a doctor’s appointment in a few hours. I was going to see if you wanted to go, but you’re working so it’s okay.”

“A doctor’s…No, please. I’ll get Chris to cover for me. He’d love to, actually. Can you wait for me?”

“Yeah.”

A genuine smile lit up Aimon’s face. He flung open the door, shutting it behind him. I glanced around the office, feeling my heart drop as I took in the shelf behind his desk. Pictures of me and my parents were decorating the surface. Pictures of my dad. I headed closer, stopping as I came level with his desk. Right next to the computer was a picture from my former co-workers wedding. I’d stood up for her as a bridesmaid, regardless that we weren’t close.

And Aimon had it here, with him?

Slowly, I continued forward, grabbing the one of my dad holding a little boy’s hand in front of doors that were unmistakable. The picture was one I’d never seen before, but I knew the man, and the boy was all too obvious.

“I found that at your parents. They have boxes of albums. I hope you don’t mind that I brought some here with me.”

“It’s you.”

I blinked back the tears, watching as Aimon walked closer.

“George was my godfather. He helped my grandfather raise me. Where Charles was distant and authoritative, George made me laugh. He was kind. He took me fishing. He helped my mom teach me to ride a bike. My grandfather or father didn’t have time for that. They were always so busy, even when at home. But not George. He came when he could, and he always made it a point to see me before he left. He was a good man. I can see why he’d want to give you to us if anything happened. Not that he foresaw or expected this. I just think…he loved us all. Even if he didn’t want everyone together.”

“I still don’t understand why. It makes no sense. I miss him so much.”

“Me too.”

Aimon came closer, taking the picture to place back on the shelf. “Chris said he would take care of things. Let’s go home while we wait. Do you want to ride with me, or do you want to meet me there?”

When he licked his lips and closed the distance between us, I prayed he’d lean down and kiss me. Touch me. Anything that showed he missed me as much as I missed him. It was a crazy thought. He was being nice. Civil. That didn’t mean he truly forgave me for what I did.

“I’ll ride with you.”

Chapter 16

Aimon

I hadn’t expected it from Fayette. Maybe after the first week we had been together, I should have. She had a temper when she wanted something. And power, which I hadn’t got to witness. Thomas didn’t like not having her in the car with them, but Fay didn’t give him a chance to argue back. She stated what she was doing and the moment he opened his mouth, she dropped the hammer, making him get right back in the car. He wasn’t happy, but he listened.

“I have to say, I’m impressed, Fay. Seems you can slay dragons after all. Is there anything you can’t do?”

“Yeah. I can’t make it past lunch without taking a nap.”

I laughed, once again raking my eyes down her body. Damn, she was gorgeous. And glowing, and beautiful, and…showing. With my baby.

“This is your car? I can’t believe you drive this thing. You must be doing very well for yourself.”

“I do okay. Scott, the owner, has shares in a few companies. He tries to play the market but he’s horrible at it. He has no idea what he’s doing. I give suggestions, and he gives me tips. Then he sends his friends to me too, who are interested in my advice. It’s all good.”

“And these tips…Doing that as a job doesn’t interest you? Or what about the companies they work for? Are they hiring? Maybe you could do something like you did before, just with someone else.”

My head shook as I laughed. “My grandfather’s been screwing them one way or another for years. Don’t get me wrong, it was tempting to ask, but I can’t. A Carmelo stays with his empire or leaves it completely, Lady Fayette. He doesn’t work for the enemy.”

“I see. I’m sorry. When Deayson’s figures didn’t add up and I caught the percentage decease, I can’t lie and say I didn’t think you were somehow behind it. I thought maybe you got ahold of them and—”

“Decrease? You’re working with my grandfather now?”

“I…told you I was a business consultant, Aimon. I double majored in Finance. I know my way around the corporate world.”

“Are the two of you best friends now? After what he did to us?”

She clasped her hands in her lap as she looked down.
