“Aimon.”

As Fayette’s hand slid through mine, I saw the hurt. I saw it so clearly that it easily merged with mine. When my mouth opened, it was more my brain talking to my heart. I never meant to ask out loud.

“How do I fix this? How do I make you mine?”

“Only you can figure that out. I don’t know.”

My eyes closed as I bought her hand up to my lips. What was I doing wrong? My grandfather didn’t think my status was good enough before. I changed it. I moved up. He let me see the nursery, something I hadn’t expected for him to do. He accused me of not coming over enough. That was something I definitely hadn’t expected. I was missing something, and it was right there. I’d gone over the rules of banishment for years. I’d wanted this! What was I missing? The more I thought about it, the more it was pissing me off. There was supposedly no way back in. It was final. It was set in stone. But here I was at the estate, just like I’d been every day now for weeks. I was here. I was fighting for what I wanted. I was…trying. And…fighting.

Fighting.

I was moving up because I was putting everything I had into it. My entire adult life, I made opportunities happen. I made deals go through. I fought for them. I gave everything I had to force a deal. And I made us one of the richest families in the world because of it. I wasn’t doing that here. I wasn’t putting my foot down and claiming what was mine.

“Aimon, what are you thinking about? You look different. Are you mad?”

I kissed her hand. “Only at myself. I’ve been tiptoeing around everyone like I’m not good enough to be here, or good enough to have you because of your status. I’m Aimon Carmelo. I’m the Aimon Carmelo. I’ve done the impossible. I’ve helped build an Empire. Not being a part of this family doesn’t erase that. I lost myself for a while…Not anymore.

“What do you mean?”

“The name, the status, it was never meant to be about wealth, but somehow that’s what it became. To have a title, you must first have love for those who you’re responsible for. The love must always come before duty. I’ve heard that before. That came from Charles. He may have done some unforgivable things in my life, but so have I, and my grandfather’s sick. He doesn’t have much longer. You’re pregnant with my child, and I…I want to be with you, Fay. I may not be the Carmelo heir anymore, but I’m worthy of you.” I leaned in, pressing my lips to hers. “I’m worthy, and I’m done being pushed away. From you, my daughter, or even him. You all need me, and my grandfather can try to throw me out as much as he wants. I’ll camp out on the road in front of the house if I have to. I don’t care. I’m staying from here on out and no one’s going to stop me.”

She smiled, easing down so she could stare up at me. “I’ll need some popcorn. This will be quite the show.”

A laugh billowed from me as I laid down on my side. She rolled to meet me, not inches from my face. When I reached up to tuck a lock of hair behind her ear, she leaned into my hand, holding my wrist while she kept me close.

“Want to keep reading our book tonight?”

Fay’s smile faded. “I’m sorry, I already finished it. I finished the entire series.”

“Without me?”

“I couldn’t help it. It was so good. But definitely not something we should probably read out loud. Especially around the baby.”

My eyebrows rose. “Did it get that bad?”

“Where do I even begin? It was a massacre in some areas, sex, an orgy—”

“What?” I laughed. “A real vampire orgy?”

“Blood and all. It was great. The fighting, the love, the end.” She sighed. “You’ll have to read it.”

“I think I will. You know, we can always start something new. I can even take you to the bookstore and we can search together. We’ll find something good and Lucia appropriate.”

“Hmmm.” Fay’s hand lifted to hover just over my chest. She didn’t even have to touch me for my pulse to quicken. “What if appropriate isn’t quite what I’m looking for?” Her palm settled over one of my pecs, and I moved in at her grip, leveling my lips at her cheek.

“Maybe I can whisper those parts in your ear. You like dirty talk. I bet you’re even wet right now thinking about it.”

My kisses were barely existent. I worked my way to the lobe, biting the flesh before sucking it into my mouth. The whimper that followed was full of need. Fay’s hold disappeared and her hand pushed under my shirt. The contact burned any apprehension I harbored. I slid Fay on her back, angling so my body was only leaned over her chest. Her knees bent and the loose dress she wore fell to her hips.

“Look at that. These dresses are good for something. I think I like them after all.”

She laughed as I wrapped my hand around her inner thigh, moving towards her panties. The knock at the door had me groaning.

“It’s probably Thomas.”

“Allow me.”

I stood, heading for the door. When I opened it, I was met with a very confused Thomas.
