“I’m sorry?” I didn’t wait for his response as I headed to my closet.

“Warden; they won’t sign. I worked on Lou for two months before I was disinherited. I was right there. He was ready. He doesn’t like instability and that’s what’s happened. He’s not going to sign, Fay. He’ll have to get to know you better, and with the timeline as far in as it is, he’ll go to someone else. I’m surprised he hasn’t already.”

I didn’t stop. I pulled the dress over my head, grabbing a more form fitting, professional style. When I slipped on the blazer, Aimon was still standing at my closet door.

“I have to try. This is important to Charles…and Lucia. She deserves me to do what I can for her future.”

Although there were heels in every color, I chose the same black ones I wore every time I had to dress up. Aimon stepped out of my way as I headed back to the vanity to twist up my hair. Small strands slipped free, but I didn’t fight it. There wasn’t much time. I grabbed the mascara, opting for a quick fix. I could still hear my mother. “You’re in the big leagues now. Sometimes, we’re rushed in the most important times. If you ever put on any make-up, just one thing, always go with mascara. Lips are nice to look at, Fay, but it’s the eyes that hold the power. Always the eyes.”

Luckily, I didn’t have to opt for just one. I threw on a light powder and a semi-nude lipstick. Nothing dark. All I needed to do was look alive.

“There. I need.” I spun, reaching over to grab a pair of small hoop earrings.

“You look beautiful.”

I secured the backs, smiling. “I look thrown together and that’s okay. Did you want to wait here, or in the study? I shouldn’t be long.”

Aimon lifted his arm. “The study, I suppose. I’ll walk you down.”

There was such comfort in having Aimon back with me. Comfort and ease. I felt like I could be myself when he was close. Like there wasn’t anything for me to worry about. But there was. I wasn’t used to the throat-cutting side of business anymore. I could do it just fine, and I could do it damn good, but I didn’t necessarily enjoy it.

“There it is again. That face.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

As Aimon led me towards the stairs, I tried not to think too much on it.

“That look, Fayette. It’s dread. But more than that. It’s—”

“Stop looking into this so closely. I said it was fine. That I was fine. You worry too much.”

“I can do that. I care for you, and you’re caring for my daughter.”

Aimon’s arm lifted from mine. With one arm he held my bicep, and with the other, he went behind my back to hold my hip.

“What are you doing?”

“It’s safer this way. Those shoes and these stairs. Marble is not ideal for pregnancy. You could easily slip and fall.”

“For Pete’s Sake, Aimon. I’ve been walking these stairs for months.”

“It only takes once for something bad to happen. Maybe it’s time we see about finding you a room downstairs.”

Before I could answer, my name echoed throughout the space. “Fayette, there you are.” Parker was pushing Master Charles from the elevator as we approached. “What’s this with Warden? Parker said Thomas was setting up a video call for you?”

“Yes.” I eased out of Aimon’s hold as we stepped for the last stair. “There’s been some complications, but I’ll try to put them at ease. It should be fine.”

Master Charles looked over at Aimon, coming back to me. “I’m sure you’re right. I’d help, but we’re off to my doctor’s appointment.”

“You’re leaving for that? I thought Parker—”

“It’s my choice. This house is getting too cramped for my liking; I need out of here. I’ll be back before you know it.”

“Alright. I’ll see you later, then.”

I smiled, watching him nod at me and Aimon. Parker pushed him towards the front door just as Thomas was rounding the hall.

“Lady Fayette, they’re waiting.”
