“Grandfather, hold on!”

Aimon jogged their way as I headed for Thomas. I didn’t have time to wait around. I wanted this call finished. I wanted to try to make it work.

"How did they look? Were they upset at all?”

Thomas led me towards the conference room. “It’s hard to say. I couldn’t really get a read on them.”

“How many?”

“The owner, Lou, and his two leads.”

“Okay.” I took a deep breath, standing straighter as we rounded the turn. When we got to the door, I forced a smile, heading in and shutting the barrier. Papers from their contract were laid out on the desk, and the camera was already on, displaying Warden’s team. Mine was paused as I sat down. Another big breath left me as I clicked the button and saw myself appear on the screen.

“Good afternoon, everyone. I’m Fayette Brexton. It’s so nice to finally meet you. I was told you had some questions before going forward.”

Lou was surprisingly younger than I had expected. Where I thought he’d at least be in his forties or above, he had to have been younger than me. Early twenties? It was hard to tell as he kept his face emotionless.

“Truthfully, Ms. Brexton, I’m not sure there will be a contract. I don’t know you. I don’t even know what’s going on with Carmelo Enterprises anymore. My calls aren’t returned in a timely manner. No one knows who to reach out too. Where the hell is Aimon? He gave me his word he’d take care of my company, and now he’s gone. Just…gone. No one’s heard a word from him. Is he dead, because that’s the rumor?”

“I’m so sorry about the treatment you’ve received. It was not intentional on our part. We’re in a transitional process amongst ranks which I’m afraid has somewhat confused our teams, but I assure you we’re working it out as we speak. And Aimon is not dead. Not even close. He’s taking some personal time—”

“Sorry, I’m late.”

I turned, my eyes going big as Aimon pulled up a chair next to mine and took a seat.

“Hold, please.” My hand rose to the Warden team, but I moved in next to Aimon’s ear. “What are you doing? You’re going to get us in trouble.”

“No. It’s okay. I talked to Charles.” Aimon kissed my lips, catching me off guard as he turned back to the camera. “So sorry, Lou. You have to forgive me. You wouldn’t believe the last few months we’ve had. I see you’ve met the future Mrs. Carmelo.”

“Aimon.” Lou smiled for the first time since we got on the call. “I thought you were dead. Everyone thinks you are. Did I just hear you correctly? Are you two getting married?”

“You better believe it. Beautiful, isn’t she?”

“Yes, she is.”

“And she’s brilliant, but you’ll see that soon enough. Did I hear you correctly before? Did someone say, dead? I’m clearly not dead. That’s what you heard?”

“It’s like a blackout on the Carmelo end. No one says a word.”

“Interesting. Well, how’s my Fay doing? We’re trying to give her more power. You know, what’s mine is hers, sort of thing. I believe it’s important for her to see how the Carmelo life is. All who connects with us are family. Plus, she deserves to have access as my other half. That’s the way I want you to see her. She is me. I am her. I trust her completely. Fay knows what she’s doing.”

“That’s wonderful to hear. All of it. Unheard of in this industry, but great. I’m surprised she even wants to be involved. I can’t get my wife to step foot in my office.”

Aimon laughed. “She’s very passionate about taking this role. Has she introduced you to Lucia?”

Lou’s brow drew in. “I don’t believe she has.”

“Stand up, love.” Aimon grabbed my hand, and I slowly rose. When his free one molded onto my stomach, Lou’s head whipped to one of the women at his side.

“Would you look at that. No wonder you’ve been so busy, Aimon. Here, I thought you were kicking us to the curb.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. I never forgot. I was just momentarily…absorbed. I’m living the life.”

“You sure are. You look happy. I’m damn glad to hear it. To see it. I’ve never seen this side of you before. You used to be so serious. Persistent. I feel better. A lot better, actually.”

I settled back in my chair, squeezing Aimon’s hand. “We’re going to take excellent care of all of you, Lou. I can promise that.”

“If Fayette says something, you better believe it. Carmelo is here for Warden. I’m sorry we can’t be there in person, but my soon-to-be-wife has been advised not to travel due to her condition, and I couldn’t dare leave her side. I hope you understand why we’ve sent our team instead.”
