She nodded; her hair drenched in sweat as she once again leaned forward to push. Nurses were preparing the room as the doctor threw me an excited look.

“We’re almost there. The baby is crowning. A few more pushes, Fay.”

Fingers gripped into mine as Fay screamed out. My arm was around her back, helping as she put all of her strength into bearing down.

“That’s it. One. Two. Three.” We were all counting as Fayette repeatedly made progress. When she let out a scream and crying finally filled the room, it topped every experience I could have had outside of my family. Cars. Deals. Mergers. None of that mattered. Tears filled my eyes and my chest swelled as the doctor lifted my son onto Fay’s chest. They were wiping him down, but his eyes found mine and held. And just like that, the love I was capable of feeling multiplied a million-fold.

“He’s beautiful. He looks like you.” Fay was sniffling as she kissed his head. And me, I was kissing hers. Praising her. Thanking her.

“You did so good. You’re amazing. I love you, Fay.”

She leaned over nuzzling her head against mine. “I love you too. And so does he. He’s not even crying. He’s watching you, Aimon. Look at that.”

“Let me hold him before they take him away.” Blue eyes stared deeply into mine as I brought him into my arms. There was so much dark hair on his head just like Lucia had that it made me smile. “Preston Charles. Your momma is right. You are one good looking boy. Why so serious? You must take after me on that too.”

Fay laughed, but I couldn’t tear my gaze from his. The awe I felt was unreal. Our instant bond was home—the only place I cared to be anymore.

“Welcome to the family. I have so much to teach you.”

And I did. Fayette and I may have been raised completely different, but together, we knew we wanted the best for our children. Money wasn’t a factor. Security wasn’t an issue. I did everything to protect what was mine. If Charles had taught us anything at all, it was that the heart of the family was in the history. A history, now, I was proud to continue.

Fayette and I were the heart. Our love was the pulse. The Carmelo line was here to stay.

The End.
