“Imagine you’re at the shelter. You’re doing your thing and then, the most amazing thing happens. What is it?”

Rebelle felt a smile lift her lips. “Daisy gets adopted by a wonderful family.”

“Okay, so who do you tell?”

“Will.”

“How do you get in contact with him?”

“Well I don’t need to, he’s right there with me.”

“Exactly, Rebelle.”

Rebelle’s smile slipped into a scowl once she realized what Justine had done. She opened her eyes and found her friend smiling at her.

“I don’t think you’re confused at all. I think you need to get out of your own way.” Justine blew her a kiss before getting into her car and driving off, leaving Rebelle dumfounded.

She returned to the house, thoughts of Will plaguing her.

“How did you know you were in love?” she asked the others.

Christy’s brow pinched in thought. “Dean made me feel like I could fly. Like anything was possible. I was truly happy and whole.”

“What she said. Like I could do anything with him by my side,” Taylor added.

Rebelle had similar feeling towards Will, except Justine was right, theirs felt more about partnership. About what they could achieve together.

“How does Will make you feel?” Taylor asked gently.

Rebelle paused, thinking it over. “Safe. He’s got this big, big heart. And I don’t doubt that he’s hiding a part of himself from me, like Marcus did, because he’s the same around everyone. When he’s on his own in the cattery, he talks to cats, he thinks I don’t hear him but I eavesdrop and he’s authentic. He’s the same person whether it’s a room full of rich investors, the cats, his fansor me. He’s open and vulnerable and doesn’t hold anything back. He makes me feel like I deserve to be loved.”

“Tell him,” Christy urged.

Rebelle shook her head. “It’s not just me. He needs to choose this too. He hasn’t come back, hasn’t chosen what he wants for himself. He’s barely spoken to me so I guess I’m not what he wants after all.”

“He’ll figure it out, I have faith,” Taylor said, handing her another Bellini and they put on a horror film and ate brownies.

“Did you make these from scratch?” Christy asked, bits of brownie stuck in her teeth.

“Yes, why?” She omitted Beau helping her.

“No reason. They’re delicious,” Taylor snickered, and Rebelle shook her head before pelting the banshees with remaining brownie pieces until they were laughing and she looked forward to a long future of sleepovers with these women.

Chapter 25

“I dominate. That’s why you come to me. Why you need me. I’m the only one who can explode your business. My contacts, my name, my experience. It’s why you’re here. If you weren’t serious about this you wouldn’t be here. This is my territory and if I accept then I’m letting you play in it. Now, have you got a better counter-offer than the bullshit you just put forward?” Will snarled.

“Cut!” the director shouted.

Immediately Will shook off his ‘viper stance’ and rolled his shoulders, willing the ick factor to slide off him.

“Perfect! That was fucking perfect, Crawford!” A random executive producer gushed at him but he didn’t want to hear it. He detested himself and everything he’d just said.

There was a time when he would have relished giving a monologue like that. But times had changed,he’dchanged. He wasn’t the same man he’d been ten years ago when he would say shit like that. Hell, he was a different man even to just three, four months ago.

His time in Citrus Pines had changed him. He’d seen what really making a difference looked like. And it wasn’t some harsh words, big ballsy attitude and making those who need your help practically grovel for it. It was care, kindness and hard work. Not flashy sets and celebrity friends.

His work no longer satisfied him, it wasn’t meaningful. He’d made himself, and others, rich but now the thrill of the deal had never felt less appealing. He needed more. He needed worthwhile. He needed to get out of here.
