She shook her head.

He laughed gently. “I’m kinda famous.”

She snorted. “Kinda famous? For what?”

“A lot of things,” he replied, and she felt his stare leave her. He didn’t elaborate and she didn’t press him either. They made it back to the shelter and he was taking the growling cat box from her before she could bat an eyelid. She raced ahead of him, unlocking the shelter and he sauntered right past her.

“Do you even know what to do with that cat right now?” she snapped, hating how he acted like he owned the place.

His cool eyes swept to hers. “Well, I was gonna grab a crate and blanket from the storeroom and set him up in the kitchen. Figured I’d keep him in there, cover the top with a blanket so it’s sheltered, and he feels safe until he’s acclimated.”

Rebelle clamped her lips shut, pausing. That was exactly what she would have done. He was learning quickly which wasnot at allimpressive. She realized he was headed for the storeroom andher heart leapt into her throat. She darted after him, grabbing his bicep.

“Wait! There aren’t any blankets in there!”

“Oh, where are they then?” He turned and looked down to where her hand was gripping him. Her eyes dropped to her hand latched around his arm, her fingers nowhere near meeting around the hard flesh that was heating underneath her palm. She snatched her hand away, warmth suffusing her cheeks and her heart pounding. Shenevertouched people.

“Uh, just grab one from the clean pile in the kitchen,” she said.

“Do we have a washer here?”

We. He said we.

“No, I use the laundromat in town,” she replied.

He considered her. “You drag these blankets and towels into town every time they need washing, like every two, three days?”

“Yes, it’s not a big deal.”

“Why don’t you have a washer here? Or use the one at your place at least and save the journey?”

Why is he always asking questions that I don’t want to answer?“Once you’ve got our new resident set up, you can leave. I don’t need any more help today.”

He cocked his head to the side and regarded her gently. “Rebelle, don’t be like that.”

“See you tomorrow, Will.” She spun on her heel and made herself scarce.

Once he left, she snuck into Bryan’s kennel and snuggled down with him, she had missed him today. She dug her fingers into his wiry fur and held on tight, thinking about how she had raised her voice at Will, hadtouchedhim. She had surprised herself at both actions, the fact that it had felt natural, and she hadn’t noticed she’d done it. That she feltcomfortableenough to do that.

He had only come here twice and somehow he already had her defenses slipping. She didn’t like it, didn’t like that he also clearly had kept it from her that he was some kind of celebrity. She didn’t like dishonesty or secrets and she certainly didn’t like being in the dark. She needed to know who he was.

She kissed Bryan on his snout and grabbed the keys to the truck. She drove to Palm Valley and parked outside the library. Once inside, she headed straight for the row of computers they had.

Once when Marcus had left his laptop out she had searched the internet to look for any trace of her sister. So, she sat down, opened up Google and typed in Will…shit what was his last name again? Luckily Google filled in the rest for her and she clicked onWill Crawfordand thousands of pages came up. His incredible net worth - her cheeks flamed as she remembered saying she couldn’t afford to pay him. He was right, he didn’t need money. He never needed to work again. He was set for life, for thousands of lives.

Rebelle gasped at the sheer volume of articles and information on him and scrolled endlessly.

Bad Boy of Business.

Hot Head.

Temper Tantrums.

Assault.

Violent Rages.

Sickness churned her gut as more articles highlighting his behavior came up. Fights, aggression. All the things that terrified her. She clicked a link to a YouTube video of him on his show. He raged at one of the contestants, got in their face, yelling before knocking over the stand their presentation was on, flipping the table where the other judges sat before storming out.
