He arched a light brown brow. “Them?”

“Yes, rich assholes with more money than sense!”

His hand slid across his jaw, scratching the stubble there. “Hmm, like me, you mean?”

She blinked at the hurt in his eyes before he quickly masked it. She swallowed. “No. You’re not like that.”

“Don’t you trust me to pick the right kind of people to invest in the shelter? You think you’d have some more faith in me by now, it’s been weeks.” He turned to leave and she moved in front of him, blocking his path.

“Will, wait-”

“You’re not the only one who cares about the shelter, you know? What do I need to do to get you to trust me?” He brushed past her as he exited the room.

She stood in the kitchen, her mind and heart warring with each other. Rebelle didn’t fit in at events like that and what would she even wear? She didn’t own any of her own clothes. Everything was second hand and torn because she couldn’t afford any.

Not anymore…her brain piped up. Now she was getting a regular paycheck, she was able to buy her groceries and pay the bills and she could afford clothes too. Except she didn’t know where to go or what to buy. There was someone who could help her though.

She took out the phone that contained only three numbers: Will, Dr. Park and Justine. She opened a new chat with Justine.

Rebelle: Hey, it’s Rebelle. I just wondered if you could recommend somewhere to get a nice dress? Like a dress someone would wear to a ball?

The reply was instantaneous.

Justine: I can do better; I can show you. When do you want to go?

Rebelle paused. She had wanted to do this on her own, hadn’t been asking for Justine to accompany her but the thought of trying to find a dress so fancy left her feeling overwhelmed. Maybe going on her own wouldn’t be the best thing.

Rebelle: Is tomorrow too soon?

Justine: Not at all. We can get lunch too. You need just a dress or anything else?

Rebelle’s fingers fumbled as she typed, still not used to messaging.

Rebelle: A formal dress, maybe shoes? A bag? Jewelry? I don’t know.

Justine: Okay, we’ll need reinforcements.

“Reinforcements, what does that mean?” Rebelle asked Bryan who was curled up at her feet and just stared at her lovingly. A moment later she received a notification that she has been added to something calledRebelle’s Angelsand there was an image of what looked like a movie poster with theCharliecrossed out andRebelleplaced over the top.

Christy: We’re in!

Taylor: Love a shopping day, let’s go to Palm Valley #roadtrip!

Realization of what, or who, the reinforcements were settled in.

Justine: Love a girls’ day out but don’t get distracted, this is for Rebelle. We need to get a dress for the ball.

Taylor: Perfect, I need one too.

Rebelle: You’re coming to the ball?

Taylor: Hells yes!

Christy: We all are, we’re VIPs darlin’.

Another wave of guilt washed over Rebelle. Of course, Will would invite good people, he was a decent man with strong morals and big beating heart in his chest. It was one of the reasons she had agreed to let him work on the shelter with her. She should have known better.

As though her thoughts conjured him, he appeared in the doorway. “I’m gonna take off. I’ve got a meeting with a contractor about expanding the back for a doggie play area and building a cattery. I’ll let you know if they sound like the ones for the job, it’ll be a big commission for them if they impress me given how much work we want to do here.” He didn’t lift his eyes from his phone.
