“No problem, missy. Is there a wait list we can put our details down on?”

Rebelle shook her head. “N-”

“Sure thing,” Will interrupted. “Come right this way.” He took the gentleman over to the little waiting area they’d created with a coffee machine and comfy chairs and tables for adoptees to fill out the necessary paperwork. They planned to expand it to sell toys, beds and litter trays so people could get everything they needed to bring their new bundle of fur home, he just needed to find the right supplier.

Will talked to the man and took his details down. He had another look around before waving goodbye and leaving the shelter. Will spotted Rebelle scowling at him and not in the sexy way she usually did.You are so gone if you think her scowl is sexy…

“What’s going on?” he asked.

“I don’t trust that man,” she answered.

“Gerry? Why not?”

“He was too interested in Daisy.”

Will shrugged. “He’s looking for a Pitbull?”

“And he just happened to come here on the first day and find the Pitbull that’s not available for adoption because we’re waiting for the outcome of a cruelty case? I don’t trust him. I’m getting a vibe and I don’t like it, Will. We need to move her.”

Will scoffed. “You’re being paranoid.”

Rebelle rounded on him, her eyes flashing angrily. “Excuse me?”

He immediately regretted his words. “I just mean, I think you’re being overprotective and seeing trouble where there isn’t any.”

She ignored him. “I need to call Jae.”

Will’s pride rankled at the mention of the sexy vet who had already shown interest in his woman. “Jae?”

“And Blake.”

“You can’t, he’s just become a dad.”

“Then, I’ll call someone else,” she snapped, pulling out her phone.

“Rebelle, hey,” he gripped her arms, steadying her. “Slow down. Look, if you want to move her then we’ll do it but after everyone has left. Only another hour.”

She peered up at him, her expression carefully blank. “You don’t believe me, do you?”

He cocked his head to the side, sighing. “I didn’t say that.”

She pulled herself free of his grip and fixed him with a look that made his balls shrivel up inside his body.

“Excuse me, I’d like to have a look at the kittens if possible?” A woman interrupted their stare off. Rebelle pasted a smile on her face and went to help her. They were busy for the next hour so didn’t get a chance to talk again. Then the shelter was closed, and Rebelle fed the dogs while Will tackled his beloved felines.

He found her in the kitchen, furiously scrubbing at the food bowls. “Great first day! Alfie’s adopted. Bear is taking Betty and Veronica, we’ve got some names down on our mailing list and that woman is going to take two of Parfait’s kittens. How do you feel?” he asked, coming up behind her and kissing the back of her neck.

He felt her shoulders tense and hated it. “It’s great,” she said, sounding unenthusiastic.

“Are you still worried about Daisy?”

“Of course.”

He clapped his hands together. “Come on, let’s move her. Where do you want her?”

Rebelle dried her hands on a dish towel, brushing a damp lock of hair off her forehead. “Put her in the home.”

He faltered. “Is that a good idea?”
