“No, call the cops and I’ll call you back.”

“Reb-” She cut him off. Her hands trembled with fear as she got up the call log and ducked down from the window in case the phone was illuminating her.

Daisy continued to growl and Bryan had positioned himself in front of her crate, protecting her. Rebelle scooted over to themfor comfort while she called Blake. There was no answer, so she left a garbled voicemail. She called Will, praying he would answer, that he wouldn’t be mad and ignore her.

He answered on the first ring. “I’m sorry, beautiful, I didn’t mean-”

“Will! Someone’s here. I think they’ve come for her, is Blake with you?”

“Shit, no he’s not. Okay, I’m coming, stay on the line.” She could hear the panic in his voice. Heard him telling the guys, minus Blake, and running through the bar with Taylor shouting after him. Then she heard his car start up, jumping at the blast of heavy metal music before it was silent.

“Belle, you with me?”

“Yeah, I’m here. Hurry please,” she whispered. The dogs in the shelter all began barking their warning and her heart stuttered in terror.

“There’s definitely someone here, Will. The dogs are all barking, I need to do something.”

“No, I’m coming, Belle, I’m nearly there.”

She heard the distant sound of glass smashing then the barking grew in volume. “Shit, they’ve broken in. The animals!” she gasped, her heart just about beating out of her chest in fear for them.

“Belle, don’t do anything stupid. Stay put. I’m nearly there,” he growled like he knew exactly what was running through her mind.

“I can’t leave them, Will,” she whispered.

“Dammit Rebelle, please. I’m begging you, stay there!” Will was shouting now and she could hear his tires screeching. She couldn’t worry about him, she needed to focus on her fur babies. She hung up and glanced down at the phone and saw a message.

Jae: Police ETA 5 minutes.

She heard a dog’s whimper through the night and Daisy growled again and barked. Rebelle’s stomach turned at the thought of something happening to the animals and she couldn’t wait any longer. She was terrified of what might be out there but needed to protect them.

She opened the door to the home and went out into the night.

Chapter 22

“Fuck, come on!” Will roared as Rebelle ended the call. He smacked the steering wheel and put his foot down, the pedal flat to the floor. He was minutes away, a million thoughts racing through his mind.

Time stretched on and he pulled onto the lane to the shelter, his tires spitting out gravel, churning to get to her quicker. His headlights lit up the building and he spotted Rebelle at the door wearing just her pajamas. He slammed on the brakes and was out of the car and running to her moments later.

A man appeared and blew past Rebelle as he ran out of the shelter and headed towards the trailer.

“No!” Rebelle cried.

Will ran after him, determined not to let him get anywhere near Daisy. His pace was fast thanks to all his training, and he was gaining on him. A second later, Will tackled him to the ground and wrestled the guy onto his front and the moon came out from behind the clouds.

“Let me go!” the man snarled.

“Not a fucking chance, Gerry!” Will spat, seeing it was the guy from the shelter earlier. Rebelle had been right, as usual and he felt like an even bigger ass than he did earlier.

“Will?” Rebelle called; her voice filled with worry.

“Stay back!” He didn’t want her anywhere near Gerry.

“I’ve got the police and Blake,” she called.

“Will?” Blake shouted and then a flashlight was blinding him. He held up one hand to signal Blake when Gerry tried to make an escape. But Will was at least twenty years younger and stronger so Gerry didn’t go anywhere.

Blake appeared with two officers behind him, and they took Gerry. Will turned, ready to hold Rebelle tight and never let go, when her body plowed into him as she threw herself into his arms. He enveloped her shaking form, stroking her back, soothing her as she gripped him tight.
