“Yes,” my eyes flickered to her mouth. I pressed my thumb on it and brushed over those luscious lips. “I can’t get you out of my fucking mind. I tried... I tried so fucking hard to erase the taste of these lips, but it’s still there. Nothing’s changed. I wanted you then, and now, even more.”

She shook her head, muttering “no” repeatedly. More tears poured down her cheeks and the look in her eyes was downcast, crestfallen. Like I was stealing something from her. Did her loathe for me run that deep? She looked like she’d rather be somewhere else than in the tiny space with me. I couldn’t blame her; I didn’t give her much of a choice.

That’s when I saw it. Her shifty pupils.

I narrowed my gaze. Something wasn’t right. Her sadness was for a completely different reason. My heart burned with rage at the thought of the tall, blue-eyed man,

“What the fuck are you hiding?” My voice was so deep, I felt the rumble at the back of my throat.

“No—nothing.” She shook her head. Too fast. “I’m not hiding anything.”

“Is it him?”

“What?”

“The superhero. Are you scared of leaving him? Washeyour lover?” The mere thought of his hands on her made my guts twist and blood boil over a hundred degrees.

“What? No! No, he wasn’t.” Her eyes shifted again. She didn’t seem to be concerned about the accusation and focused instead on something behind me. I glanced over my shoulder, and, with breakneck speed, she put her hands on my cheeks, and turned my face to hers. Her touch startled me.

“You know what?” she murmured with a shaky breath. “It’s fine. I’ll come with you...”

I frowned. That was easy.Too easy.

“Let’s go now. I’ll face my fate. I’ll live through the torture...” she kept rambling, and I was even more convinced that she was hiding something.

I flung her hands off my cheeks, more furious than ever.

“Pavel!” I roared.

“Boss.”

He hurried inside the room.

“Tell the men to search the house. Again. I want every fucking stone turned.”

“No!” Vanessa yelled and squirmed. Anything to get out my hold. I tightened my hand on her hair. “Let me go! Don’t touch anything!”

“Search the fucking bathrooms! Search everywhere!”

“Alexei, tell them to stop!Please... please, stop! Tell them to stop! I will do anything. I’ll go with you. Just... please.”

Not even that moved me. I was determined to know what she treasured so much that she’d be willing to do anything to protect it. I was fuming and my nostrils flared.

Her screams pierced deep. I’d never seen her so tortured, not even after her kidnap. Her eyes shifted again to something behind me, and I followed the motion to the closet. I gritted my teeth.

“Pavel!” He rushed in and I tossed her to him. “Hold her.”

I reached for the gun and marched to the closet.

“No!”Her legs left the floor, and she lunged forward to try and stop me. “Alexei! listen to me...Alexei!”

I ripped the door open and aimed my gun forward. There was no one. Just clothes, hangers, and... a small sniffling human sitting on a heap of boxes. He slowly lifted his small head to stare at me, and I felt a sickening shock in the pit of my stomach.

I stared at this little boy, his bright green eyes and thick dark blonde hair.

Chapter 14 - Vanessa

One time, during the period of my pregnancy, the doctor asked about the father of my baby. “He’s out of the picture,” I’d said. She didn’t poke further, but offhandedly whispered something I’d never forget in that motherly voice of hers.
