Even though I don’t know why, and would much rather stay right here, I heed the concern he sends down our bond and put his shirt back on, hoping he also has some pants I can wear.

Taking my hand and leading me to his room, he answers my unasked question, “As soon as the other hunters realize these aren’t coming back, more will be on their way.”

“Where are we going to go?”

Kane digs through his dresser and hands me a pair of sweatpants. They’re way too big, but the drawstring should hold them up.

I pull them on. As soon as I’m dressed, Kane dresses himself. “The safest place for you now is at your father’s casino, surrounded by the rest of the pack.”

“Pack? There’s more wolf shifters?”

Kane nods.

“Wait… Does that mean my dad—?”

“Come on, Princess. We’ve already stayed too long.”

Kane seemed damn certain I’m human when I asked. It would only make sense that my dad is too. Then how did he get involved with shifters? How did he even discover their existence in the first place?

I have so many questions, but it’s clear Kane isn’t going to answer them as we flee the scene to take refuge at The Silver Moon Casino. My father’s domain and the place I grew up without him.

Chapter fourteen

Kane

Alice goes to herfather’s penthouse to wait for me while I catch Paul, Dimitri’s underboss, up on the attack on the cabin.

When I walk into the Art Deco apartment, I find Alice, wearing her own clothes now, jeans and a sweater that hugs her curves, standing at the giant window, overlooking the sea of neon lights below.

The Silver Moon Casino towers above every other building on the strip. Dimitri insisted on it. Wanting it to be a beacon for lost souls like me.

“You hungry, Princess? Paul said it could be a while before your dad gets back.”

Alice shakes her head. Sadness pulses down our bond, drawing me to her. My new beacon of hope. My new home.

“My dad’s lied to me a lot, hasn’t he?” Alice asks as I slip my arms around her waist from behind her, placing a gentle, comforting kiss on her crown.

“I promise, Alice. Everything your father has done, has been to protect you.” It’s what Dimitri does. What he’s always done.

Alice relaxes into me as the truth of my statement flows between us.

“I suppose that job will be your job now, though, won’t it, old friend?” Alice and I whip around at the sound of her father’s voice.

“Dad,” Alice says, stepping out of my hold on her.

“Dimitri,” I say, taking a bigger step to stand between them.

“It’s alright, Kane. Fate has spoken. I won’t stand in its way,” Dimitri says with a gentle smile that exposes his elongated canines.

“So, youareone of them,” Alice says, stepping around me, looking her father up and down. “Then…” she looks back at me, then at Dimitri again, “How am I not?”

“Sit down, Alice.” Dimitri waves for us to follow him to the seating area next to the fireplace.

“Fate brought your mother and I together, but not until after she became pregnant with you.” Dimitri pauses to give Alice a breath. A chance to speak. When she doesn’t, he confesses, “I may not be yourrealfather, Alice, but you are myrealdaughter.”

And there it is. The truth. The reason I couldn’t tell her that her dad is a shifter. She would have figured out he’s not her blood before he had a chance to explain.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Alice asks, at last. Her voice full of hurt. “Why have you ignored me and pushed me away my whole life?”
