In the elevator on the way up to my room, I send Kane my love. It wasn’t his place to tell my father’s secrets. And as soon as it became necessary, he told me all of his.

My head cocks, thinking back on our time together, remembering that he never told me exactly why he left.

What bad thing did he do?

From what I’ve learned the last couple of days, I have to accept that he probably killed someone. And I have to hope that they deserved it.

When Kane comes after me, because I know he will, I’ll demand an answer. I don’t want anymore lies or secrets between us.

Safely in my room, the one my dad had set aside for me before I moved out, I crack open the minibar while I wait for Kane to lose his patience and come find me. For him to punish me for running away from him and not coming back to him like the good girl he wants me to be.

A couple mini bottles of vodka, half a bottle of tequila, and one package of Macadamia nuts later, there’s a knock on my door.

The room spins when I jump off the bed and zigzag to the door ready to drag Kane inside and back to the bed.

But when I open the door, it’s me who’s dragged back into the room.

By my throat.

“Let me go,” I shout and thrash at the man it takes me a second to recognize through the alcohol haze once he’s pinned me to the wall.

The bartender.

“Shut up,” he says, pressing his entire body against mine. I can’t move or scream as he compresses my windpipe. “You’re coming with me. You can either come quietly and unharmed or you can fight. Give me the pleasure of knocking you unconscious and doing whatever the fuck I want with you.”

Fuck, I wish I still had Kane’s pistol. At this range, I wouldn’t miss and this would already be over.

But I don’t have a gun. Or the skill to fight him off.

So, I don’t fight. But I do send every shred of panic and a cry for help to my mate. Hoping he’s still in the penthouse, just above us.

“Let’s go,” the man says, backing off, but drawing a gun from behind him and holding it to my head.

“Where are you taking me?” I ask, walking ahead of him with the barrel of his pistol digging into the small of my back.

“Shut up or I’ll knock you out anyway.”

I swallow the lump of fear lodged in my throat that I’m trying desperately not to let turn into a sob as I turn the handle on the door to the hallway.

It’s barely open and the world blurs as I fly and skid across the floor a split second before a gunshot splits my eardrums.

I hear the growling and gnashing of teeth before the room comes into focus and I see Kane’s wolf swiping the pistol from the bartender’s hand. When it thuds heavily on the floor beside them, it’s take-two of the scene in the cabin. Only this time, I don’t have to think twice about where I aim.

The adrenaline is in full swing as I scurry across the floor, grab the gun, and train it on the bartender.

“Alice, no,” my father’s voice calls from the doorway. “We need him alive.”

Wolf Kane has the man pinned. He easily could have killed him, but didn’t. “He was going to take me. He threatened to knock me out and rape me, for fuck sake.”

Kane snarls, opening his maw over the bartender’s throat. The distinct odor of urine fills the room as a dark spot stains the front of the bartender’s pants.

“Information first, Kane,” my father says to Kane’s wolf before turning back to me. “This man is most likely working with the hunters who attacked you.”

Realization strikes me as a couple of the shifters I had spotted on the casino floor come in and take the bartender away. As soonas they’re gone, I ask, “Is that the real reason you kept the truth from me? Because… I’m human.”

Holding my shoulders, my father turns me to face him. “You’re my daughter. Shifter or not, you were born into this pack. You’re one of us.”

“And I can prove it,” Kane says, standing in all of his naked glory in the middle of the room. “I’d like to tell her… Alone,” Kane addresses my dad.
