For the first time all night, a smile stretches Kane’s lips, disarming him briefly before he hides it away.

My heart twists, wanting to see him smile again. My brain attempts firing on whatever cylinders the alcohol hasn’t dulled to figure out how.

“Nice car,” I say, hoping he’ll smile at the compliment.

Nothing.

The heater is on full blast but without my coat, or Kane’s warm body against me, the large gap in the fabric over my torso becomes uncomfortable.

At first, I try pulling the gap closed. When that doesn’t work, I just cross my arms over my chest, trying to keep as much of the heat in as I can.

Without a word, Kane reaches behind the seat. A second later there’s a plaid, fleece blanket in my lap.

“Thank you,” I say, unfolding the blanket and wrapping it around myself. The shivers ease almost instantly.

Kane shakes his head.

“What?” I ask.

“That dress is ridiculous.”

“This dress is a work horse that more than paid for itself tonight.”

“You’ll be paying for it again when you suffer from exposure,” he snaps. Angry though he has no right to be.

I throw my anger right back at him. “It wouldn’t be an issue if you hadn’t dragged me out into the cold without my coat.”

“You should never have taken your coat off. That…” Kane pauses and grips the steering wheel so tightly I’m surprised it doesn’t break apart. “It’s not for them to see.”

“Eighteen,” I say, circling my face with a finger. “Can wear whatever I want. Or nothing at all, for that matter.”

A growl from Kane’s throat wars with the one from the car’s engine when he punches the accelerator.

My breath is cut short as the increased speed flattens my back against the seat. Reflexively, I throw out my hands to get a gripon anything for extra support when he doesn’t slow down for the corner and the backend breaks loose.

It’s hard to keep my eyes open as the world whizzes by. The only thing I truly comprehend are the bright Las Vegas lights growing more and more distant, and the trees on either side of the road growing thicker.

The further and faster he drives without putting us in a ditch, the further and faster I want him to drive. I should be screaming at him to stop. The words rise to my throat many times, then he takes another corner at break-neck speed, making my core tingle in a most unexpected way, and I swallow those words, along with my fear.

Holding on for dear life, a delighted squeal escapes my lips as Kane whips the car around one last curve of the mountain road. It’s not until he kills the engine, stopped in front of a modest, well-maintained cabin in the woods, that I realize what I’d latched onto.

Chest heaving, still trying to catch my breath, I stare at my fingers curled into Kane’s thick thigh.

The hard muscle twitches under my palm, breaking my stare.

I lift my eyes. When I find Kane in the dashboard light, his shoulders and chest rise and fall with heavier breaths than my own. I wonder why, but only for a second, before the adrenaline rush eases and the chilly mountain air, filling the cab finds far more skin than it should.

“Get in the house,” Kane barks, exiting the car as I lock my arms around myself, covering my bare left breast.

With a deep sigh, I secure the flannel blanket around my shoulders and climb out of the car, grumbling to myself as it starts to snow, “Et tu, dress?”

Chapter three

Kane

Fuck that dress. Fuckher for wearing it. And fuck me, because I’m never getting the image of her perky pink nub puckered against the cold out of my head.

My skin prickles and aches. As much as I want to keep my distance from Alice, my wolf wants nothing more than to run her down and fuck her senseless.
