“It belonged to my mother,” I inform her. “I had it taken out of our family vault today. She was the last person to wear it. Before she… she died. And now I want you to wear it. Despite our beginning and the reason for this match, you’re going to be my wife and I want to build a strong foundation for our legacy. Besides, she would have wanted you to wear it.”

Rosa nods, her expression still dumbfounded. When her eyes meet mine, I can tell she’s touched.

“Damn, Enzo. I didn’t know you had a romantic in you,” she murmurs.

“I’m not getting down on one knee, of course.”

“Of course,” she echoes with a small smile. “But you could put it on.”

She hands me the box and stretches her hand at me. I swallow before taking a hold of her hand. Very gently, I remove the ring and slide it onto her finger. It’s a small diamond with tiny sapphires lining the edges. I imagine it cost a fortune, and that’s without taking into account the sentimental value involved.

I almost didn’t give it to her. Convinced myself to buy her another ring instead. But she’s worth it. I need her to be worth it.

When her gaze lifts to mine, a ripple of lust slithers through me. And then Rosa makes it worse.

“Traditionally, all that’s left is a kiss,” she says softly. “To seal the deal.”

“To seal the deal,” I repeat, amused.

Panic flares in her blue eyes. “You don’t have to, of course. I just-I wanted us to at least…” She stops her rambling and rubs a hand over her eyes. “Just forget it. You can go,” she mutters.

“Rosa.” Her name comes out rough, tinged with desire. “Shut up.”

I pull her closer and count three heartbeats. We both pause. Waiting. I’m trying to convince myself it’s a mistake, to convince myself not to. My hand traces the diamond on her finger. Her breaths come out in soft pants.

I really shouldn’t do this.

But at the end of the day, when her hazy gaze meets mine and I see my own lust mirrored there, I know I have no other choice.

Fuck control. My hand goes up to her face and my head lowers as I capture her lips in mine.

CHAPTER 10

Rosa

For what feels like a lifetime but is actually only a few seconds, I can hardly breathe. Because Enzo is kissing me. My eyes are wide and panic courses through my veins. Panic and something else. He’s so close his eyes glimmer. I’ve always known he’s good-looking, but now the sight of him hits me like a blow to my chest, spreading warmth through me.

“Rosa,” he says against my lips. “Kiss me back.”

The words are a plea. And they effectively bring me back to the present. The commanding pressure of his hand on my face feels like fire in my blood, slicing lower to the wetness pooling between my legs. My lips part, and that’s all the opening he needs.

Enzo kisses me like a man starved. I’ve been kissed before, but not like this. He kisses me like I’m the oxygen he needs to survive, each slide of his lips searing against my heart. I grab onto his shoulders, afraid of letting go. Because if I do, if I let go, I’ll fall. And I’m not sure I could get back up.

I grab a fistful of his hair, holding him even closer as I drag his mouth to mine and slide my tongue between his lips. Enzo lets out a soft hiss before lifting me so I can wrap my legs aroundhis hips. He moves until he’s pressing me against the wall. Need pours through me in thick waves. I moan softly against his lips.

I can feel his hard erection between my thighs. I can’t stop myself from grinding against him, desperate for the friction.

“Fuck,” Enzo groans, wrenching his mouth from mine.

I blink, staring up at him. My heart is still running a marathon and I’m not sure how to stop it. We’re both breathless. Enzo’s jaw tightens as he looks at me. He lets out a soft breath and leans down, pressing his forehead against mine.

“It was a good idea to put on that robe, principessa,” he whispers. “A really good idea.”

I slide down from his body, keeping my back against the wall because my legs currently feel like jelly. It’s actually ridiculous that a mere kiss made me feel that way. He barely even touched me.

My cheeks are hot and my body feels like there’s a fire racing through it. Enzo’s expression is slightly pained as he watches me. He runs a hand through his hair, making the reddish-brown strands stick up.

“I think that as far as traditional kisses go, we did our best,” he finally says.
