“Like I keep telling you, principessa, I know everything.”

She lets out a soft gasp followed by a laugh when I push her gently backward and twirl her before pulling her back. When she’s in my arms again, her eyes finally meet mine.

It makes sense that I’d be attracted to her. She’s an incredibly beautiful woman. And we’re going to get married. Sexual attraction makes sense. But what doesn’t make sense is the way my heart speeds up when her eyes meet mine like this. Or the part of me that wants to know everything about her. What drives her. Her secret thoughts. Her dreams. And, most importantly, how to win her heart.

Every moment I spend with Rosa is a moment closer to me being fucked.

After our dance, we walk back to her family and friends. The D’Angelos have joined our little group. Rosa excitedly hugs Daniella D’Angelo, who seems a little angry. I don’t listen in on their conversation; I’m too busy watching Christian D’Angelo.

He’s talking to Roman. I’ve never met him, but the man’s a legend in the Cosa Nostra. A powerful Don. Someone I could respect. He and Roman were true to their legacies. They made sure to protect the empires their fathers left them—something I couldn’t do. It wasn’t in my control at the time.

Both men look up at me, stalling their conversation.

“Christian,” Roman starts, “this is Enzo Russo. My future brother-in-law.”

“I heard,” Christian says dryly.

He appears to be sizing me up. I arch an eyebrow at him.

“I’ve heard a lot about you, too. Exactly how were you able to find out about the vineyard sale before everyone else?”

“Vineyard” in this case is code for heroin field. We’re in public, after all.

Christian smirks. “I guess it just goes to show how much better than you I am.”

That draws a chuckle from me. I knew I’d like him.

“Maybe,” I agree. “For now. Tread carefully, D’Angelo. There’s a new Don in town.”

“I can drink to that,” he says with a short nod. “I look forward to seeing what you do. Good luck.”

“Thanks.”

Roman speaks up. “Now that you’re done bonding, do you guys want to hit the bar? I swear these events get more boring every time I come.”

“They’re not so bad,” I say, my eyes trailing over the numerous men and women wearing all sorts of luxury items and precious gems.

It was a good idea not to bring Jason along. He gets irritated when he sees opulence and extravagance so casually displayed. He barely had anything to eat as a child.

“I’ve been going to these events for years, trust me, man. They’re terrible.”

We decide to head to the bar, but before that, I catch Rosa’s eye. She breaks apart from Elena and Daniella and moves over.

“You good?” I ask and she nods.

“Yeah.”

She actually does look happy. There’s color in her cheeks and a brightness in her eyes. It’s pretty clear she loves being surrounded by her family and friends.

“I’m going to the bar with the guys,” I inform her. “Do you want to come with me?” I ask as an afterthought.

“No. Dany and I are going to the restroom. I’ll come find you later.”

For some inexplicable reason, worry spreads through me. “Be careful. There’s a lot of people here.”

And not all of them are friendly. I’m really starting to regret not bringing extra security.

“I’ll be fine,” she says, shooting me a look like I’m being unreasonable.
