I break the kiss to suck on his neck, kissing my way down his chest. I pause halfway down, my eyes landing on the scar on his chest. My hand reaches up to trace it. I can’t help but wonder who hurt him like this.

“Don’t ask,” Enzo warns, his eyes growing hard.

I ignore him. “What happened?”

“Rosa…”

For some reason, I’ve chosen this moment to try to coax him out of his shell. It’s admittedly bad timing.

“Please, just tell me? Who hurt you?”

He grows cold so fast it gives me whiplash. Enzo sits up, shifting away from me. He runs a hand through his hair and looks at me for a second before getting up.

“I can’t tell you.”

“You can’t or you don’t want to?” I ask, tears pricking the back of my eyelids.

Still, I don’t cry. I can practically see the internal war raging within him. It would hurt him if he saw my tears, but I’m angry that we can’t seem to bridge this gap.

“I can’t say it,principessa. At least, not to you,” he says, his voice hollow.

“I understand,” I say tonelessly.

“Fuck,” I hear him say under his breath.

I don’t look at him as he walks out of the room. but my heart does break a little. And I realize with a start that I care much more than I thought I did. Which is made even clearer when I stand and pick up his shirt that lays discarded on the floor of my bedroom. I pull it on, buttoning it up to my chest before sinking back into my bed. Then I look up at my amazing masterpiece on the wall.

I fall asleep like that, surrounded by the scent of him. My last thought before I fall asleep is that Enzo Russo could ruin me.

CHAPTER 13

Enzo

We haven’t spoken in two weeks.

I’ve barely seen her, thanks to some problems that have been arising with the businesses abroad. I’ve been busy trying to fix them, and Rosa seemed content not to approach me. She’s been busy with wedding preparations. And now, the day has come and I’m seated in a pew at the church, behind Rosa’s mother and some other family members.

Beside me are the D’Angelos, Carlo and Christian with their respective spouses. Rosa’s standing to the side of the aisle, radiant in her bridesmaid’s dress. She hasn’t looked at me. Not once. Standing in front of her is the maid of honor, Kiara Coleman.

On the opposite side is the groom and his two groomsmen. Roman looks great in his custom-made tuxedo, although there’s a hint of nerves in his expression, which I find amusing. His eyes alternate between staring at the closed doors leading into the church and his daughter, who’s in her grandmother’s arms in front.

After a few more minutes of waiting, soft slow music starts to play signaling the bride’s entrance. Elena walks in on her father’s arm, and I hear a tiny gasp from Daniella D’Angelo.

“She looks so beautiful,” the redhead whispers.

“Yeah she does,” her sister-in-law Astoria agrees.

The bride glides down the aisle to the front. Her father hands her over to the groom and the ceremony commences. I only half-listen, too distracted by the sight of Rosa in front. Then it gets to the vows and I concentrate on what the couple says.

Elena goes first. “Rome, I’ve known you since I was a little girl with stars in my eyes. I knew you when those stars dimmed and I knew you even when I didn’t believe in stars at all. Through every moment of my journey, you’ve been there. Sometimes, I didn’t even realize it. Sometimes, I really despised you.”

That draws a laugh from the guests.

“But through it all, my heart has always known you were the one for me. We hit a big iceberg when I lied to you and took something of yours away. But I’m going to make this promise to you today that it’ll never happen again. By marrying you, I’m yours now and forever, in sickness and in health and all that.”

Another laugh.

“I love you so much, Roman De Luca. And I’ll say it to you every day, through every fight. You’ve shown me your heart and I’ll do my best to protect it. Always and forever.”
