Her mouth drops open. “Are you kidding me?!” she screams when she finally gets over her shock.

I smile and climb out of car to see Elena and a couple of other women, Rosa’s friends, standing in the doorway of the house. Some of them are already dressed in the red bridesmaid dresses Rosa picked. Elena offers me an encouraging smile as I move to open Rosa’s door.

She steps outside, her eyes still disbelieving.

“Enzo, I swear if this is some joke…” Her words trail off when she notices her bridesmaids in front of the door. “Oh god, you’re being serious.”

“I’m sorry for lying, baby. But I had a chance to give you the wedding of your dreams and I took it.”

“But…” She pauses, seemingly at a loss for words.

I feel a little bad so I lean closer and stroke her hair. “I wouldn’t have had to resort to this if you hadn’t been so adamant about pretending Christmas doesn’t exist. You love it. I pulled some strings to make sure we got married today.”

“That shouldn’t be possible.”

“It’s possible,” I assure her. “Especially since you’re the only one that was in the dark about it. Even the twins kept it a secret. I wanted to surprise you.”

“I still can’t believe this,” she mutters.

“We’re getting married today, sweetheart,” I tell her, almost not believing the words myself. “Nothing could stop me from making you my wife. Nothing except you. If you don’t want to, now’s your last chance.”

Her eyes narrow and her mouth turns down in a frown. “Oh, so you plan a wedding behind my back and decide to give me a choice in the matter, what? An hour before the ceremony?” she asks.

“Two. Enough time to get you ready,” I say with a small smile. “And I’m sorry. I’ll apologize all you want.”

“You’ll be apologizing forever,” she corrects, muttering other words under her breath. “I can’t believe everyone kept this from me.”

“They know what it means to you.”

She lets out a soft breath. “You can go. I’m sure you have things to do while I get dolled up. Lena and Dany will fill me in on what happened. After I kill them both. Honestly, if anything, the two of them should have had my back. They’re my best friends,” she sniffs.

“So, you’re saying yes?” I ask cautiously.

Rosa smiles, amused. “You didn’t even ask me that when we got engaged.”

“Will you marry me today or not, Rosa?” I press insistently, needing her to say the words.

“Yes,” she says on a sigh. “I’ll be there. I promise,” she adds, her voice sincere.

She gets on her tiptoes to place a soft kiss on my lips. And after one last smile, she walks over to her friends. A part of me wants to pull her into my arms and never let go, but I force myself to get back in my car and drive away. After today, our fates will be intertwined. Forever.

A partof me doesn’t believe it. Not when I’m fully dressed. Not when I enter the church to pews filled with relatives and loved ones.

I’m nervous as hell as I walk up the aisle. My eyes find Isa and the twins in the front row as I move to take my place in front. Maria and Matthew wave at me, identical grins on their faces. Despite everything, I’m glad Rosa talked me out of killing their mother. I would have regretted it if I had. If only for their sake. Denise is on anti-depression meds now, receiving treatment and slowly returning back to normal.

Jason’s behind me, acting as my best man. It feels like fucking déjà vu because a couple of months ago, I was here andRoman was getting married. I almost can’t believe I’m the one standing here right now, which is ridiculous because I knew even then that I would marry Rosa. I just didn’t know how deeply in love I would be with her when it happened.

My heart beats faster when the song for the bride’s entrance starts. Right on time. I brace myself, waiting. The doors open and she finally appears, holding her brother’s arm. They both walk down the aisle, and I can’t look at much else apart from her. Out of the corner of my eye, I notice her mother crying. I hold my breath until she’s standing in front of me.

“Hey, baby,” I mouth, taking her hands. “You’re the most breathtaking thing I’ve ever seen.”

She’s not wearing a veil, so I get to see her beautiful smile.

“I’m still killing you for this,” she whispers.

The priest clears his throat and the ceremony starts. I wish I could say I was present for every moment, but it seems I have a bad habit of tuning out wedding sermons. Including mine. I manage to say the right words at the right moments, though. The priest says the customary vows and then it’s my turn.

Everyone falls silent as I clear my throat to speak. I’m not addressing them, though, only the woman standing in front of me.
