“How'd you know that?”

“I got friends like you, pendejo. I guess that's how you found me.”

“I found you because I'm a lot better at my job. Who told you I'd be in Miami?”

“I told you. A friend.”

I slam his head against the sink and he grunts, his face distorted from the pain.

“Give me a fucking name or I'll break your skull open and send your family what's inside it.”

“His name is Billy. Billy Barnes I think. He works at one of Zacharias's clubs as a bartender. He needed the extra money so we made a deal.”

“A decision he’ll come to regret soon enough. What I don't get is, if you're after Zacharias, then why are you following me?”

Blood drips from his teeth as he laughs. “Who says I'm after Zacharias?”

“Let me guess. I killed someone important to either you or someone you work for, and your plan was to make me suffer for it.”

Shaking his head, he spits blood into the sink. “Sorry to not be the one to give you the ego boost you're searching for, but you're wrong again.”

“If it's not me then why… The kid. You're after the kid. But why?”

“I'm not always given the details. Usually only a name and description. That's it.”

“By who?” I press the gun harder to his temple.

“You should be happy. He's just some stupid kid. What's he worth anyway?”

I don't know but I'm curious to find out. “Clearly he's more than some stupid kid if you were hired to kill him.”

“No one said anything about killing him. I was supposed to deliver him alive.”

That means he's more valuable than I expected. They need something from him and he needs to live for them to get it. What does he have? “To who?” I demand louder this time.

“I don't know. I've never met or seen the guy before. I was supposed to grab the kid and wait to be contacted again.”

“Then you will.”

“What?”

I press my finger into the center of his bleeding, crooked nose and he squirms, grinding his teeth. “I said, you'll do what you promised, but I'll be there waiting with you.”

“It could take days for him to call.”

“Then that's how much time we'll be spending together.”

“Over some fucking kid?”

“He's an asset to the cartel and I'm here to make sure he returns to Kansas City safely. I can't ensure that happens by leaving you or your friends alive, can I? Now fucking walk and stop talking.”

Doing as I ask, he goes in the direction I lead him in, out the back door of the store, and we walk around the building until we reach his car. Phillip's eyes are on the phone and no one is driving by or entering the parking lot when I force the bleeding man into the trunk of his car. I pocket his keys and phone. Using the rope he has back there, I tie him up and I slap duct tape over his mouth before locking him inside. I'm sure he planned to use all this stuff on Phillip but it got used on him instead. Funny how that works sometimes.

Phillip doesn't look at me until I knock on his window. He opens the car door, tilting his head. “Done already?”

“Not exactly. Can you drive?”

“What?”
