Someone bangs on the glass and I open my eyes. Everything feels different from before. The parking lot I'm in now is different from before and outside is more lit. Another slam on the glass has me turning my head and my heart is in my throat until I realize the bloody face isn't Antonio's. “Please. Let me in. Help me.”

Blood pours from his mouth and he slumps over the car. His body is lifted and a knife is pulled from the back of his neck before Antonio's face comes into view. “Stay there, burrito. Don't open the doors until I get back.”

He tosses the body over his shoulder and carries him to a black SUV, shoving his body in the back. When a guy exits the back of the club, Antonio points his gun at him, shouting, “Don't move.” The man steps forward, reaching for something in his pocket, and Antonio pulls the trigger.

Looking at me, he runs my way, yelling, “Start the car.”

Jumping in the front seat, I quickly buckle myself in and do as he says. He climbs in the passenger seat, not closing the door until I've already started driving off.

“What's happening?” My heart races in my chest. “What was that?”

“The men I was told to track down were never after Zacharias. None of the last few were.”

“Who were they after then?”

Grabbing the wheel, he turns it right. “Get off the main road. I don't know who could be following us.”

“Antonio, why aren't you answering me? Who were they after?”

He turns to me, chest heavily rising and falling. “You.”

“What?” My hands shake against the wheel. “Me? But… why?” My next breath gets stuck in my throat and I'm stifling.

“Pull over at this stop and let me take over.”

I take another breath and this one gets through this time, but the next is painful as I stop the car.

“Easy now. I got you.” He takes off my seat belt and drags me over to his lap, shoving the door open to make room. He strokes my face and hair. “Can you do the 3-3-3 for me?”

“I… I'll try.” Closing my eyes, I breathe in the scent of him before opening them again, looking around. “Cars driving past us, the moon, and you are what I see.”

“Good. Keep going.” He runs a hand down my back.

“I hear traffic, crickets, and your breathing.”

“One last step,” he whispers against my neck, sliding his fingers inside the back of my shirt. They’re so warm and strong.

I shake my hand in the air, move my head from side to side, and lastly, I press my lips to his, my tongue only partly slipping into his mouth to tease his. A loud honk has us breaking apart and he brushes a tear from my eye I didn't realize was there before.

“Better?”

I nod, unable to form words.

“Good. Let's find somewhere to sleep for the night. It should be at least two hours away to be on the safe side and somewhere off the main roads.”

“So basically a hellhole like what we were staying in before?”

Laughing, he shifts me off his lap enough to get out of the car. “Not exactly. I have some acquaintances here. Friends of friends, sort of. I'll see if they’re up to taking guests.”

He gets back in the car, on the phone with someone, smiling. “Bueno. We’ll see you in a couple of hours.”

“You know a lot of people, don't you?”

“I have to. I travel a lot. It's not always easy to find places to stay.”

“None of these people are… You know?”

Pursing his lips, he drives back onto the road. “What?”
