EMMA

Ilooked out at the city skyline, the buildings all joined together, echoing dimly with the rush hour traffic as the sun set, temporarily blinding me in spots.

I had to find a new place.

“Daddy,” I said, “this view just isn’t right.” I always got what I wanted; my father owned half of Chicago. I was royalty in this city.

Father ok’d everything, and I pretended to be the sweet, perfect angel he wanted me to be, despite the fact that I was growing restless for a little excitement. I had even grown bored of manipulating him.

Still, I was happy to hear that Father would get me a new place.

I looked around. Even though it was supposed to be luxurious, with no expense spared for my comfort, I knew that this place was built with cheap, boring materials, and the view was subpar.

Anyone but my father would have argued with me. If anyone other than me tried to argue with him, they would soon learn that he always got his way.

Who was my father? None other than Lane Price, the man who built his fortune saving the local banking industry just a little over a decade ago. His secret?

He had the right people taking care of him.

Father never really told me about his work; he assumed I thought he was just some investment banker, but I was no naive girl. I knew that he associated with the Reed Mafia after sneaking around and collecting intel on him over the years.

After all, a girl had to know and understand where her money was coming from.

I lounged around as the sun’s rays turned a pink-red. If the red had mixed better with the orange light, it would have been the same color as my hair.

As I drank my deep glass of red wine, I thought about calling over one of my girlfriends, but truth be told, being a billionaire’s daughter meant that my entire social circle merely hung around me for my money. And gold diggers are the most mundane kind of people.

What I really wanted was someone to spark some kind of interest in my life. I was missing something that money just couldn’t replace, but admitting it was another story. Even my “friends,” who were always gushing over my fiery red-haired beauty, wanted to set me up, but none of the men they tried to pawn off on me were even close to my type.

I sat in silence for a moment, then decided it was time for some music. Some smooth jazz, some French house music…? No.I wanted to dance to some 80’s hits.

“Alexa,” I said. “PlayTake Me On.”I longed for a fun, karaoke night with friends, but dad had insisted this past week that I stay in. Being rich had its drawbacks, including feeling like I was in an expensive, all-inclusive resort of a jail.A jail that needed a better view…

The music came on and I forgot my worries. I was free to move in my red gown, which I promptly removed, and blue lingerie, and I was determined to have a good time.

That’s why I hardly noticed the stunningly handsome man who suddenly appeared in my apartment. You know how you sometimes lose yourself in your own world? Well, I was so lost in it that when I finally opened my eyes to a gorgeous devil dressed in black leather pants and jacket with a smooth hairdo, I couldn’t even scream in shock.

I was speechless.

The man clapped slowly. His gold chain necklace reflected the sunlight off his chest like he was some kind of god.

Finally, I mustered up the ability to talk.

“You’re…” My mouth went dry.Who was this man?

I screamed. He just sat on one of my couches and lit a cigarette. The way he did it, so calmly, so coolly, was the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen.

“Where’s my money?” the man asked. I screamed again; my voice was already a little hoarse.

He rolled his eyes and shrugged. “I’m sorry Emma,” he said. “It appears you’re out of luck.” Then he did the unthinkable: he lunged at me.

I tried to sidestep him, but he was quick and strong. I found out as his arms wrapped around me, tightly.

Is it strange that I want him?I could smell his musky cologne, not overbearing, just strong enough for me to know that he got up early in the morning to get ready for his day.

“Don’t play this game with me,” he said, a little more forcefully. “Now you listen to me. Your father didn’t pay our price, so now you’ll have to.”
