He winked at me. “Long time no see.”

“You’ve done more than see me,” I said, and he grinned.

“There’s plenty to eat,” he told me. “Dig in.”

He didn’t start his meal until I did, and we savored every bite over light conversation. I was going to get him to tell me all about himself.

“How long have you been working with the Reeds?”

“A while,” he said. “But I don’t want to talk about work. How about you?”

“I’ve never worked for the Reeds.”

He chuckled. “Really? I wouldn’t have known.”

We both laughed.

“Do the Reeds keep you busy?” I asked him, ignoring his request.

“I’m with you now,” he said. “You keep me pretty busy.”

I gave him a devilish smile, and pursed my lips. It was hard getting much out of him. I mostly learned that he rose up in the ranks for the Reeds, but he reminded me several times that he didn’t want to talk about his work.

“It’s too much of my life,” he finally said. “I got lucky when I met you though.”

“You mean, when you kidnapped me?”

“I prefer to think of it as when I took you away from your boring life,” he said.

I agreed. His words resonated with what I had felt for so long: being the daughter of a billionaire made everything easy. Too easy. Jack had adventure and thrills written all over him, and I wanted more of that every time we experienced it together.

“So, what’s on the agenda for today?” I asked. In my mind, I saw us exploring the countryside, and making love as the sun set.

“It’s a surprise,” he said. “Get ready, you’ll need comfortable shoes.”

“Oh?” I knew much more about the temples than he did, so I was surprised that he would take me on a walking tour, but I guess he had done some homework on it. It was kind of cute that he was trying to keep me entertained.

“Yeah,” he said. “First, the…” He grinned. “Like I said, it’s a surprise.”

I smiled, and we left. I was not disappointed when I realized he was taking me to the Wat Arun, an iconic temple on the west bank of the river. I had seen it before in pictures, but nothing beats the real life version.

We arrived by boat, on a ferry full of other travelers mixed in with locals who were simply enjoying the day. I was surprised when Jack made light conversation with a little boy in a foreign language.

“How many languages do you know?” I asked.

“Depends on what you mean by ‘know,’” he said. He said a few more words to the boy, and then his attention was all on me. “I know a few words of Thai. A lot of people speak English here, but I wanted the practice. I just asked the kid where he was going. He said he was going to the temple too.”

The temple was a stunning sight before us, its many features appearing majestically against the river setting. I felt like I was in a fairy tale with a man that would travel to the ends of the earth for me. I hoped I was right.

“Wait till we see the central tower,” Jack said. Ahead of us, at the entrance to the temple were vendors dressing up ladies in beautiful Thai clothing. I almost forgot what we were going to do, the view was so stunning.

“Theprang?” I asked, and he nodded.

“You’ll tell me all about it?” he asked. He must have loved the fact that I knew so much about the country.

I couldn’t remember much about it, so I had to phone it in. I did know it was referred to as the Temple of the Dawn, however, so I described it as such.

“Why is it called that?”
