“They’ll regret it,” Braden said. “Karen will make them all pay. How do you think I have this King man? How do you think I knew they were going to use Emma as leverage in our dealings?”

“Anyone could have figured that last one out,” I scoffed. “I just need to get her. You can have whatever you want from Lane Price.”

“You’re going to go to Lane,” Braden said. “And you’re going fix his relationship with us. Karen has men working for me in the King mafia. Don’t cross us.”

“Who’s coming with me? This guy?” I pointed at the man in the chair.

“You’ll use him as leverage to get in,” Braden said.

“And if they don’t buy it?” I asked. I didn’t understand why this man would be so significant to the Kings. It almost seemed as if no one was safe from being used as something to trade.

“They’ll want him.” Braden yanked off the bag.

It was King’s top lieutenant, Jason Grant.

He and I had come to blows plenty of times, but we’d had a mutual respect for each other , and I could see that respect was still there.

Good. I need everyone I can to be on my side, and Jason knows the Kings’ secrets.

“Very well,” I said. “There’s no time like the present.”

Jason agreed, and I was shown several of the Reeds’ weapons. It’s funny how Braden really thought I was going to work for him. Jason however, seemed genuinely loyal to Braden.

“Isn’t it funny how allegiances change?” I asked Jason as we were picking out our respective weapons. I had picked a small pistol that I placed in my left breast pocket, and two daggers that I hid near my ankles.

“That’s all you’re bringing?” Jason asked. “You realize how guarded this place is right?”

“You’re getting us in,” I said.

Jason nodded. “And then getting executed as a turncoat. I’m walking towards death.”

“For Braden Reed?” I raised an eyebrow.

Jason cocked his revolver. “Better to die for Braden than Frank. Besides, I have a special message for Frank King.”

“As long as it doesn’t involve me and Emma,” I said.

Then Jason gestured at me with his gun. “You better not mess around. One wrong move, and you’ll die.”

Great, the guy I’m working with doesn’t trust me.I played it cool and said nothing more. We prepared for our visit to the King’s new residence.

Braden provided a map for us, and Jason showed me the different weak points in the residence.

“They can’t see very well along the east wall,” Jason said. “It’s far from where Emma is, but not so much that it’s impossible to get to her.”

“And where is she?” I asked.

“I don’t tell you until we’re there,” Jason said. “I’m keeping my leverage. One wrong move, and she’s done.”

This irked me, but I kept my calm. There was no use in making enemies at the wrong time.

Jason and I headed towards the new King residence in a grey sedan.

“This girl’s father is loaded, huh?” Jason asked.

“And he still can’t get the mafia under his control,” I said. “Money doesn’t buy everything.”

“Do women?” Jason asked.
