“And I have the perfect excuse,” I said. My father was the kind of man who valued appearances almost as much as his money. “I’ll ask Daddy to do it this week so I can look good for the photo.”

“A week?” Jack said.

“What, you don’t want to marry me?” It almost irritated me to think that Jack wouldn’t want to marry me so soon.

“Of course I do,” he said.

“Prove it.”

Jack got down on one knee. “Emma, will you be my wife?”

I looked down at him. “You don’t have much of a choice, do you?”

Jack smiled. “You’re the only choice.”

“I’ll ask Daddy to marry us this week so we avoid a huge baby bump photo,” I said. “He’ll say yes to me; I’m still his princess.”

“Have you ever thought that he doesn’t treat you well?” Jack asked.

“Of course he doesn’t,” I replied. “But I like his money a lot more than I like him.”

“Don’t let him hear that,” Jack said.

We had been so comfortable that we had forgotten we were most likely being listened to. I got up and started getting some clothes on. I picked up a pair of panties that Jack had taken off me and he shrugged when I gave him the annoyed look. We laughed together, and the day was off to a great start. It was a good thing that we had this energy together, because we were going to need it to talk to my father.

Several of the guards looked at us as if we were lepers when we walked freely through the house.

That’s when we ran into Frank King. He was a big man, and you never ignored him.

“Frank!” I gasped, hoping to not cue him in to how uncomfortable I was seeing him.

Frank didn’t seem to care, though I was worried it was all an act. “I hear your man couldn’t stay away from you.” Then he looked at Jack. “And I hear you took down Lane’s second hand man, plus two guards.”

“Karen’s fine,” Jack said.

“I know, or you wouldn’t be. Don’t forget who’s here,” He warned, giving both of us a stern look before walking away.

I tried to stay calm as we walked to my father’s room.

A guard stood at the door and put his hand out when we approached. “Mr. Price requires an appointment.”

“I’m his daughter,” I said.

The guard didn’t seem to know what to say to that; he looked away, like he was hoping to evade any more interaction with me.

“You heard her.” Jack gave him a stern look.

The guard shrugged, half nodded, and went to go get my father.

Almost immediately, we heard him yell, “I said,no one gets in without an appointment!”

Jack pushed past the guard as the man darted back out of my father’s room. I followed him.

Daddy was pacing back and forth in the room talking to himself. He either didn’t see us, or didn’t care, because he was like that for a while. When he finally seemed to notice us, he didn’t say a word.

Jack wouldn’t let me speak, and I’d agreed it was important to be silent. I had never seen my father like this.

Don’t forget who’s here.I could hear Frank King’s words as Daddy continued to ignore us and I felt a real chill down my spine. I had never seen my father like this, and I didn’t want to know what was so troublesome to have my father have this kind of fear. I looked at Jack who was acting as if we were there to have coffee with my father and he was late.
