I watched in horror as he pointed his gun at my father.

“No!” I screamed. Jack shot and missed. One of King’s men pointed towards where Jack had been. This was his diversion. And I’ve ruined it.

Some of Braden Reed’s men were pointing in my direction, and I made my way out through the perimeter, hoping that none of them would see me. There was plenty of commotion in the inner walls of the garden, and I hoped that no harm would come to my father. I got to our meeting point, panting, and Jack followed shortly.

“What were you thinking?” Jack demanded.

“What wereyouthinking?” I shot back. I couldn’t believe he had shot at my father and hadn’t told me that was his plan.

“Do you hear all the yelling over there?” he asked. “Shooting at your father bought us time. And….”

I wanted an apology, not an explanation, and Jack didn’t seem to understand that he had crossed a line. Jack started trying to reason with me. I didn’t want to hear it and shut him down.

Jack grunted, frustrated, and I started to go back to the wedding.

“After all we’ve done?” Jack asked. “Really?”

“I don’t know you!” I yelled. I was heartbroken thinking that Jack would harm my father. The look of anguish on Jack’s face, said everything to me.

“I just wanted to keep you safe,” he said, tears in his eyes. “I wasn’t ever going to hurt him.”

I didn’t know what to say. Jack had organized this escape, and my father had been nothing but controlling. Still, I didn’t like thinking that Jack would shoot at my father. Having seen it made me rethink everything.

It was then that we heard more guards heading our way.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t tell you,” Jack said. “But you have to trust me!”

I looked into his eyes, and at that moment, I saw into his soul. Jack wasn’t lying. He had really done the only thing he knew would keep my father safe. Shooting at him meant that more guards would come to help him and keep them off our backs.

“Let’s go!” I said, running past the gate that led out of the mansion. Jack wasn’t far behind me, and he pointed towards the other side of the park. Away from my father’s and closer to the river.

“There’s no cars there! How are we getting out?” I asked. Behind me I heard faint shots being fired.

“Just trust me!” Jack said.

I blindly followed him, thinking that I was crazy to love him. Jack led me past some woods and towards the shore of the river. There, I could see a boat in the distance.

“Now what?” I asked. I had no hopes that the boat was for us.

Jack smiled. He pointed at the boat. “We made it!” he cried, laughing hysterically. As the boat neared, I saw a familiar figure. It was a big man at the helm, and I recognized him.

“Aaron?” I asked, then looked at Jack.

“I took care of everything,” he said. “Let’s never come back here, ever again.”

I kissed him as Aaron pulled up to the shore. Jack got on the boat first, and I got on with a sense of trepidation. I could feel the motion of the boat, and Jack immediately made sure I got on comfortably.

I looked at Aaron.“What did Jack do?”

Aaron chuckled. “Anything and everything to get you out of here. Let’s go.”

“They’re going to find us,” Jack said.

“Don’t talk like that,” I said, though I knew he was right. Now, with two different mafias, ones that would have both benefitted from the birth of my child—I shuddered thinking that they were going to use my baby as a living trust for their assets.

Just another business deal to my father.

A sadness swept through me, but Jack wasn’t done telling me the bad news. “When they find us, they’ll try and kill me. The only way that I can live is if we make it long enough for you to have the baby.”
