“I don’t have a superpower, and you clearly don’t know me,” I say defensively.

Ethan pats my shoulder. “Sure. Whatever you say. Like I said, take it easy with Lily. It’s unfamiliar territory, and she’s charting it with guides she doesn’t completely trust because she’s never tested them out. While I—” he gets up. “Will be on my way. I’ll be back to check on her and Madison before I leave.”

Madison, as though she sensed that Ethan had plans to leave, comes running into the living room. “Uncle Ethan!”

“Madison! I was just talking about you.”

She pouts, and her shoulders slouch. “You’re leaving, aren’t you?”

Ethan walks to her and pats her head. “Yes, kiddo. I have to. Some people need my help, so I can't stay as long as I want to. You understand, right?”

My daughter, who isn’t easily agreeable when things don’t go her way, nods.

“Yeah. I understand. That’s why I want to be like you.”

“I’m afraid your dad is going to ban me from coming here ever again, so why don’t we talk about this some other time?” Ethan replies before glancing in my direction.

I stifle a laugh, getting to my feet. “I’ll see you out,” I say.

“I’m to wait here, right?”

I nod. “Yes, darling. I need you to guard the cabin now that you’re big enough to scare everyone away.”

“Okay!”

Ethan and I walk out, sharing a laugh all the way. We walk for a couple of minutes before Ethan comes to a stop. He lays a hand on my shoulder.

“Don’t be too hard on yourself, Logan. You’ve done well until now, so there’s enough room to try new things and enough space to make mistakes.”

“‘Mistakes?’”

He nods. “You’ll understand what I mean some other time but keep it in mind. When the time comes, and you find yourself stuck between choosing your heart and doing what you’re used to, choose your heart.

I have a feeling it’s going to lead to something good.”

I have no idea what he’s on about, but I nod.

“Okay. I will.”

“Good. I’ll keep you updated on the investigation if I find anything that might help us with Lily’s case.”

“Thank you.”

“No worries.”

Walking back to the house, I think about what Ethan meant by following my heart. Somehow, I feel it is related to Lily—that he must have seen something I’m oblivious to.

But I shake it off when I see Madison standing on the porch, a big grin on her face.I don’t need anyone else, emotionally, or otherwise.Madison and I—we make up a family, and that family is big enough as it is.

CHAPTER 6

Kaylee

My head feels heavy when I open my eyes, and I see that curtains are drawn back, and the sun rays streaking in through are making me squint. I put my hand to my stomach when it grumbles, and my eyes go to the table to see if there’s anything on it since Madison has been religiously bringing food for me since I started staying with them.

There’s nothing, which means I have to get to the kitchen if I’m going to get something to eat. I get off the bed, open the door, and almost bump into Madison, who's running down the hallway to her room. She stops as she passes me and turns.

“You’re awake.”
