I nod. “Yeah. I was. I couldn’t sleep, and I heard you two talking. If you want me to go to the store,” I amend so as not to sound too excited and end up being imposing, “then I’ll go.”

“Yes!” Madison replies, fist-pumping the air.

Logan looks at her, shakes his head while smiling, and turns to me.

“Okay. We were going to get a few supplies because Madison wants to try her hand at baking.”

“Daddy is not so good when it comes to making yummy food, and I think you need something yummy for your brain,” Madison says.

“I don’t know where she got that from,” Logan says as I chuckle.

I wave my hand. “It’s okay. If yummy helps, then I should play my part in making sure you get everything you need. Just give me five minutes, and I’ll be out.”

“We’ll be in the living room,” he says before taking Madison’s hand and walking away.

The feeling on my chest as I sift through the clothes Mrs. Owen gave me—is something akin to joy, almost like I’m getting life back. Maybe I’ll get a few clothes too.

Maybe my taste in clothes will be a clue in finding the first authentic piece of the puzzle.

CHAPTER 7

Logan

“How are you?” Dr. Owen asks as I walk into his office.

“Fine, fine,” I say, accepting his handshake before sitting. “How are you? How are the long night shifts? How is Mrs. Owen?”

“Oh, my wife is fine. She’s asked me to give you some pie, so don’t forget to pick that up when you’re leaving. As for the night shifts, we’re still understaffed, even though a new doctor joined us yesterday.

So, if ever you want to come out of retirement and help around the place, I’ll be the first to offer you a job."

I smile. “I’ll keep that in mind. How is Lily’s result looking like?”

“Like the last time you came, everything is fine. We’ve run the usual tests and done the routine checkup. The issue is her brain. There’s a physiological barrier that is keeping her from remembering things. It's a response to trauma.

Although,” he rubs his chin. “I can refer Lily to a rehabilitation specialist in the city. He’s one of the best at what he does, and if anyone can help Lily give her brain the little nudging that it needs, then he’s the one.”

“Have you told her?”

He shakes his head. “No. It’s been just over a month, and I wanted to see how things were before referring her to a specialist. We’ve done the typical evaluations, and I can say that what we have here… in our humble medical center might not be good enough for Lily.”

I exhale, wondering how she will take the news. She’s been in high spirits for a while after our trip to town. The episodes in the hallway happened only once, and the circles under her eyes were a lighter shade. I know she still has nightmares, but at least they don’t bother her when she’s awake.

“Alright. You should tell her, then. As gently as you can, please.”

“Doctors have empathy, you know,” Owen says. “And she’s been through a lot, so I know I have to be gentle when I break the news.”

There is a knock on the door, and a male doctor walks in. I take in his appearance—the clean shave, the fancy shoes, the well-ironed coat. Everything screams big city doctor.

“Mrs. Halter is asking for you, sir. I was told to tell you if she does by one of the nurses.”

Doctor Owens shakes his head with a short sigh. “Alright. Thanks, Michael. I’ll be right there.”

“Michael?” I ask when the door closes. “Big city doctor. What’s he looking for here?”

“You’re a multi-millionaire. What are you looking for here?” Owen retorts.

I click my tongue. “Fair enough, but I’m here on vacation.”
