I don’t know anything about her.

She might as well have someone looking for her on the other side, and it could be a loved one. Someone who is in love with her, who has made her days brighter and her nights less lonely.

I’d better stop dreaming. And stop Madison before she gets too attached.

I exhale. “Okay. But I’m not dating Lily. She’s our house guest for the meantime, and she’s nice, but you know she’s going to leave one day, right?”

My daughter shrugs. “I guess. But she’ll let me visit her. She said so. When she gets her memory back, she’ll ask you to allow me to stay with her for a while. You would, right?” Madison gives mepuppyeyes.

Looks like I was too late.

I nod. “Yeah. Sure. Once she regains her memory, we’ll visit Lily. At that point, she’ll stop being Lily, you know that, right?”

“Yeah. Of course, I do. Lily isn’t her real name. It’s a name I gave her.”

I pat her head.

“Good. It’s best not to get caught up.”

“But if you like her—”

“Madison.”

She giggles. “I’m just joking. I’m joking.”

The door opens as I shake my head, half amused at Madison’s clever way of pulling my strings, and Michael walks out.

“So,” I immediately stand up. “How did it go?”

“Patient doctor confidentiality,” he says. But then he laughs and pats my shoulder. “She’s not worse. But I might need to refer her to someone in another city. If you don’t mind, I’ve asked her if I can talk to you about it since you’re her guardian.”

I swallow hard. “Okay. When?”

“Whenever you’re free. I’ll be done at the hospital.”

I nod and watch him walk away, then turn back when Lily steps out. Her face looks crestfallen, but she cracks a smile when she catches me looking at her. She puts her hands together, and I watch her take stabs at her nails and the surrounding cuticles.

“I guess I’ll have to bother you guys for a few more weeks. And then I’ll have you be my chauffeur for future trips. I’m sorry for making you do all this. You’ve given me your house, a room, your food—”

“It’s okay,” I say softly. I can only imagine how she feels—holding out hope but getting it snuffed at every turn. “You can stay for as long as you want. It’s not as though I want you gone, and Madison will certainly have my head if I become a monster and send you away.”

“Yup,” my daughter pips up. She walks up to Lily and takes her hand. “You can eat all our food too. We’ll just go and get some. That’s why my dad has enough money. Right, Dad?”

I nod. “Right. That’s why I have enough money.”

Lily chuckles, and seeing her hope come alive again makes my stomach flutter.

Oh oh. Pipe down, Logan. She’soff-limits, remember?

“I’m fine driving you, too. Madison and I like to take long car trips, so you’ll just give us an excuse to take as many as possible. If car rides are too long, we’ll fly.”

“I don’t have any ID.”

“Not commercial planes,” I point out.

“Oh,” Lily’s eyes widen. Then she nods quickly. “You have a private jet. I mean, of course, I knew that. Your cabin is big, and your truck… it’s a Mercedes Benz G-63 AMG?”

It’s my turn to be shocked. “How do you know so much about cars? I’m starting to think you might have been a Jack of all trades. Cooking, being generally intelligent and strong, and now cars? Woman, we might just find out that your net worth is freaking insane.
