Maybe you’re a secret heiress who wanted nothing to do with money and decided to learn all about the world. But she got too good at it and made a buck load of money herself.”

Lily bursts into laughter.

“Now you’re just spinning tales. I know about your car because I looked it up. I mean, I knew it was a Mercedes, but the day we went into town, it drove nicely. I was curious, so I did some searching. That’s all.”

I shrug. “Sure. But you knew it was a Mercedes. My theory stands. You can't convince me otherwise. Right, Madison?”

“Right. You’re amazing, Lily.”

“And you two must have read the handbook on flattery,” she chuckles. “I’m hungry. What are we having for lunch?”

“Why don’t we go inside and figure that out?” I suggest.

“As long as Lily is cooking,” Madison says as we file in.

Lily laughs, and everyone joins in. For a moment, I forget about my plan to keep an emotional distance, falling in step with the harmony that has worked out among the three of us.

CHAPTER 10

Kaylee

I glance at Logan for the umpteenth time—at his hand firmly on the wheel and his eyes staring straight ahead. He’s barely said more than twenty words to me since we took off this morning to the airport, landed in Oklahoma, and rented a car to the airport.

What is going on?

I’m used to the Logan who makes sure everyone is alright and the Logan who seems to care about everyone else except himself. The quiet Logan with both hands on the wheel, not allowing himself to be distracted for one second, is foreign to me.

How do I break the silence?

Small talk?

I clear my throat.

“I’m a little worried.” He immediately turns to me, only briefly, but it’s enough.

“What’s wrong?” I shrug.

“Doctors. I’ve spent the past month having many people prod into my head. The doctors want to help because they know alittle about how the brain works, and then you have people who mean well, but they only end up reminding me that there’s a lot I don’t know.

I barely have a moment of rest myself because I grapple with what-ifs.What if I have a family out there? What if someone is looking for me? Why isn’t there anyone looking for me? I know I should be patient, but it gets hard sometimes. And now, I’m heading over to give someone my head so they can ask a bunch of questions and do their round of prodding.”

I watch his shoulders rise and fall, and when he looks at me again, it's with soft eyes.

“I’m sorry. I wish… I wish there were something I could do to make things easier. I don’t know how it feels to be in your shoes, and it makes me feel helpless. But whatever you think I can do to help, I’ll do it.”

“I—”

“I know I haven’t brought this up yet,” he continues, “because Doctor Owen clarified that he wanted no external stress or pressure on you. But—”

“But?” I push.

“What if we put out a missing alert for you? If you’re worried that someone might be looking for you, maybe a partner or someone at work, then we can put out an alert. Someone is bound to see it, and they’ll contact us.

Maybe you’ll get your memory from there.”

I have thought about that—countless times.

Having someone find me from a poster, recognizing me on the television, and triggering my memory. But after I had that first nightmare… of the man with the coat, it became more than just a loved one finding my information and reaching out to me.
