“Yeah. And the look in your eyes says you don’t believe it’s a made-up memory. You think it happened. You’re the one who went through everything, Lily. If you’re confident that someone took you, then I believe you.

Also, you showed signs of having been through something rough. Ethan, whom you’ve met, is investigating a kidnappingcase in Denver. He’s also had memory loss. That’s why I asked him to speak to you.”

I nod slowly, finally getting the full picture.

“That’s why.”

“Yeah. I hope you don’t mind.”

I shake my head. “Oh no. I don’t. I didn’t think anyone would believe me, so I’ve been skeptical about telling you. But now that I have, it feels like a weight has been lifted off my chest. I feel better.”

Logan’s smile warms me up some more.

“That’s good. I’ll wait for you while you’re with the doctor. When we’re done, would you like to go shopping?”

“Shopping?”

“Yeah. Owen said doing things that you used to do before can trigger memories, but all we have are a few guesses. Everyone goes shopping, so I hope it’ll be neutral enough to help with your memory.”

Kind, caring, and understanding. His wife was a lucky woman. But perhaps he was lucky, too.

And if I didn’t have the weight on my shoulders, the constant thinking that I might have a partner out there, I might have entertained the thought of being lucky myself. As it stands, all I can indulge in is the kindness he shows me—the roof over my head, food, company, and words of encouragement.

I have no idea if Logan Frasier has any feelings for me, and I can't find out.

“What’s wrong?”

“Wrong?” I snap out of my thoughts.

He nods. “Yeah. You just sighed.”

I quickly shake my head. “Nothing. Just the routine of hospitals. It gets tiring, you know. But don’t worry,” I raise a fist. “I’m used to it. I’ll get through today, and then I’ll use the shopping as a reward.

Thank you.”

To avoid more awkwardness or any other questions, I exit his car in a hurry and head into the building. After a few minutes of trying to figure out which doctor I’m supposed to see—because the name jumped out of my head as I jumped out of Logan’s car—and looking for the Department of Neurophysiology, I head back to the lobby.

I find Logan in the lobby, and he stands up as soon as he sees me.

“Are you ok, what’s the matter?”

“The doctor,” I slap my hand to my forehead. “I can’t believe I forgot his name. And his department. You’d think that with all the appointments, I’ll be used to finding my way around a hospital.”

“It’s a small-town hospital,” Logan points out. “Besides, it might be that you haven’t been here before. I was going to suggest showing you his office, but I didn’t want to be too forward.”

“You’ve been here before?” I ask, surprised.

He nods as we walk back into the busier part of the hospital.

“I owned a private security company that specialized in protecting high classed individuals and families, in the government, celebrities, and also witness protection as a favor from the government.”

My eyes widen as I take the information in.

“I had no idea.”

“Well, that was the whole point. We weren’t the CIA, but we couldn’t go about telling people our jobs. Plus, I’m retired, and the topic didn’t come up, so I had no reason to bring it up.

“But,” he says, “I was personally involved in a few cases. Cases where I had to meet someone who would have a new identity and live a new, different life so they could escape the horrorsthey had been through. I had to meet them right where the horrors took them, so I knew how best to break the news.”
