Humble, too,I muse. Most people would have sat behind their fancy chairs and made someone do the work, blurring the lines between capitalism and being human.

But not Logan.

Could the man be any more saintly?

“This hospital was one of the few I visited more than once. A few doctors know me, but they don’t know what I do. I assume they see me as a grief counselor, and,” he turns to me with a finger to his lips, “I’d like to keep it that way, if possible.”

I drag my index finger and thumb across my lips, making azippingsound. Then, I imitate throwing something away.

“My lips are sealed, locked, and I just threw the key into the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Your secret is safe with me.”

Logan stops momentarily, and I do, too, wondering why our steps have halted. Then he burst out laughing, the crinkle in his eyes prominent and his cheekbones inching high. His laughter is infectious enough that it makes me chuckle, too.

“That has to be the funniest thing I’ve heard in a while, and Madison is a pretty good comedian,” he says.

I shrug, even as my head swells from the praise. “I might be a Jack of all trades like you said. But I do know that I was not a doctor because I don't like hospitals.”

I sigh. “But I’ll do my best.”

My heart stops for a moment when I feel his hand reach out, and then it begins to pound when he interlocks his fingers with mine.

“You’ve got this. I don’t think there’s anyone stronger than you, Lily. And I’ll be waiting outside, don’t forget that.”

I know he doesn’t mean it on purpose, but the words sound like something a lover would say.I’ll be waiting for you. I won’t go anywhere. You can trust me.

And it makes me want to abandon everything and trust him.

Which… is a bad idea, as already established. Plus, I’m sure he’s saying it to be nice. Out of the kindness of his heart and all that.

I withdraw my hand.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. There,” he points to a hallway not far from where we stand. “Take that turn, and the second door you see is where you’re going. You tell him Dr. Michael sent you from Silver Peak, and you’ll be okay.”

Those words again, I exhale.

I don’t know how long I can last without becoming used to them. There’s only one solution, and it’s getting my memory back. Whatever it takes, no matter the memories my mind tries to bury, I must find a way to return to my former life.

Before things get unnecessarily complicated.

CHAPTER 11

Logan

“So, what’s the update?”

Ethan shakes his head as he dumps his bag on the floor and settles on the couch.

“Nothing concrete. You’d think that with all the years we’ve been chasing these bastards, the higher-ups will give us enough leeway to use the resources we have and cut through the unnecessary red tape. But no—they seem to care for their asses rather than the lives on the line.

"It’s frustrating.” He runs his fingers through his hair.

“What’s going on? Maybe I could talk to a few people?”

He shakes his head. “I know you have enough influence, but it will only come down on my head. They don’t think the case is important enough that they’ll use that much workforce and time, so they want us on another case.

“But the only reason they want us working on the new case is because it happened in the town and…” He exhales. “The mayor wants to be re-elected. Never mind that it’s a case that has beenin the backwoods for two years, but now that he wants to run again, he wants all closed cases opened, and if we can solve them, the better for our budget.”
