That moment.

“How are you?” Ethan asks.

I snap back to the present at Ethan’s question.

“I’m good.”

“Are you sure? Living with Logan can be a little—”

“A little what?” I cut in, narrowing my eyes at him. “You just confessed that you spent more time at my house than yours, and you’re about to complain that living with me isn’t all roses?”

Ethan raises his hands. “Absolutely not. I would not dare to say a thing like that.”

Lily laughs.

“I’m good. Logan has been nice to me, very kind, actually. I’m glad he found me and not someone else. Madison, too… thereisn’t a dull moment with both of them in the house. I think you’re lucky to be part of their family.

“Oh,” she says as an afterthought, “they are lucky to have you too. Yes.”

The corner of my lips tug into a subtle smile, and my chest swells with pride at her words.

CHAPTER 12

Kaylee

A nurse rushes into the office, interrupting my reply to Dr. Owen’s question.

“Doctor. We need you. There’s an emergency.”

He stands up quickly. “What is going on?”

I can already hear the commotion outside the door, the sound of a stretcher coming down the hallway, and nurses shouting for different things, one of them being access to the operating room.

“A car just brought in someone who was shot in the stomach. He’s bleeding badly, and they’re taking him to the operating room. The person who brought the injured man drove away as soon as we had him on the stretcher.”

Her words trip over one another, but they are loud enough to pass the message.

“Alright, prep him in the OR. I’ll be there shortly,” Dr. Owen responds.

She nods and rushes out of the office with more haste.

“I’m sorry. We’ll have to continue this conversation later.”

“Oh, yes,” I reply hurriedly. “I understand.”

I watch as he storms out of the office, too, leaving me inside, seated on a chair and wondering whether I’m supposed to stay put in until the surgery ends or leave and return later. After a few minutes, I step out, closing the door behind me.

The hospital’s corridors are quieter than when the nurse rushed in, but I sense the underlying disquiet, the chaos that ran through minutes ago still settling in. I see the nurses talking in hushed tones, looking at one another with wide-eyed expressions and disbelief.

A rare occurrence, maybe?I ponder.

In a small town like this, they must not see so many cases where someone gets shot in the stomach. That’s why they are all in shock,I conclude.

But as I head towards the exit, something about the situation seems oddly familiar. It tugs at me, at something deep inside my heart and mind, and I find myself turning back and heading to the nurses’ station.

“What happened?” I ask the first nurse.

She shakes her head as she turns to me. “The person that got shot is a doctor. One of the doctors here. He went to visit a patient at home, and apparently, the patient didn't like the news he was told. He shot him, then had a change of heart and brought him here.
