He wags his finger. “It wouldn’t be a scare tactic then, would it? But it didn’t work, so we’ll cross that off the list. Why don’t we move on to the basics?”

I never thought I’d be glad to hear someone talk about poking inside my brain.

“What do you think you’ll do when you get your memory back?” Michael asks as we walk down the hospital hallway, heading for the x-ray room.

“I haven’t really given it much thought,” I confess.

“Because you’re scared?” he asks in a soft tone.

I contemplate lying for a second, but I give in.

“Yes, I am. I’m worried that the person I’ll find isn’t who I am right now. That my real life might be horrible or that I’ll hate my job and where I live. What if I’m surrounded by people who hate me?”

“Why would you think they would hate you?”

“Why else wouldn’t they have tried to look for me?” I ask.

He strokes his chin. “You know, that’s a good point. But then, there’s the other possibility—that you’ve been living life on your own. That you were alone. What if that’s the case?” he says in a serious, certain tone that my mind considers the possibility for a hot minute.

My feet come to a halt, and I fold my arms.

“I might be mistaken, but you sound so sure, Doctor Michael.”

“Me? I’m not. I’m just laying out theories. But wouldn’t it be better if you were alone? Then you could continue your life here.”

Right.

I decide to let it slide. After all, I could be reading meaning into something that isn’t there. I follow him down the hallway, tuning in and out of the conversation.

All I want to do is be done with today.

“Lily!”

Madison runs to meet me as I step out of the hospital, and I barely have any time to open my arms and brace myself before herveryenergetic body tests my balance.

“Hey.” I pat her hair, “I didn’t expect to see you guys so soon.”

“Well,” Logan says. “Madison wanted us to pick you up from the hospital, so you didn’t have to find your way to the cabin, so we cut our trip short.”

“Oh. I’d have been fine on my own,” I say, feeling bad for whatever Logan had to forgo to get here.

“It’s okay. I can go back once I drop you guys off.”

Madison turns around. “I have an idea,” she says.

“Okay?”

“A makeover.”

“Makeover?” Logan asks, and I can see how confused he is.

Madison nods. “Yeah. A makeover. Mrs. Owen says that when you’re sad, the best thing to do is have a makeover. She says that you do your hair and your nails and get pretty dresses!”

“But—” Logan glances at me, and I shrug because I have no idea what is going on either. “Lily isn’t sad, is she?”

I feel her take my hand, and I glance down to see wide eyes looking at me.

“You looked sad this morning. I wanted to tell my dad, but he was in a hurry, and you had to come to the hospital. I know it's the hospital that is making you sad, so we can go for a makeover instead of going home.”
