“You’re right. As usual.”
He shoots me an arched brow. “‘As usual?’”
“As always.”
“‘As always?’”
“It’s a thing,” I throw my hands in the air, “you’re not always correct. Or right. You don’t always get things right. How else do you want me to say it?”
He bursts out laughing, loud enough that it gets Madison’s attention. But as I watch her from the rearview mirror, she merely shakes her head and looks away.
“I’m sorry. I was pulling your legs. I know what you mean.”
I fold my arms. “Then you were having fun at my expense?”
He pursues his lips. “Maybe? I was laughingwithyou, though. You just needed some time to catch up.”
How do I get angry at that?
I laugh. “That was a good one. I’ll give it to you.”
“Thanks. I try.”
As he continues driving, I can't help but take in an unaware Logan with a smile on his face. He looks carefree, less worried about the world and the past, and more grounded in the present.
If I could, I reason, I would lean in and kiss him. I wouldn’t need words to tell him anything. I’d show him.
But I can’t.
And that sucks.
CHAPTER 17
Logan
“Logan,” Mrs. Owen says as I walk into the house. “You didn’t have to come.”
I shake my head. “It wouldn’t be proper if I didn’t. Doctor Owen is the town’s treasure. How is he, by the way?”
She smiles and pats my shoulder.
“He’s better. At least he isn’t grumbling about staying at home instead of being at the hospital. I was forced to listen to him complain last night and this morning.
When I finally gave up and told him to go, he said his leg wouldn’t move,” she cackles. “I asked him if he didn’t see that before he began complaining.”
“He’s a stubborn man,” I say.
She nods as we head to the doctor’s bedroom.
“Yes, he is. Just like you are, too.”
“Me?”
“Yes, you. You're a stubborn young man who has all the time in front of him to forgive himself and take a chance at living life as it should be. But you’re not.”
I sigh.
“I think I’m living quite fine, Mrs. Owen. My life is perfect the way it is.”
