“Is it?” She asks as I knock on the door. “Go in.”

I push the door open and walk in to see the doctor lying on the bed, his left leg properly bandaged. When Mrs. Owen called me this morning, she said her husband had taken a fall the night before, and he had to stay in bed for the day.

She asked me not to come if it was too much trouble as she had handled everything.

But Doctor and Mrs. Owen were the two people who made Silver Peak a second home for me.Plus, I know how Doctor Owen would feel, unable to do the same thing he’s done for over two decades.

He scowls, struggling into a sitting position. I hurry to help him while his wife stands by the door. He brushes my hand off—gently, and I get the message.

I hang back and let him do it himself.

“I would have told you,” Mrs. Owen says, “but thought he would finally accept some help, seeing as it’s from you.”

I chuckle. “I’m no different from anyone else who comes to see the doctor.”

She shakes her head.

“That’s where you get it wrong. You and Madison mean a lot to us. Having no children of our own, we’re happy to have you two as our family. That’s why we look forward to your visits every summer.

This visit is longer than the others, though.”

“Lily,” I say, knowing that she’ll understand.

She leans closer.

“Lily? Does she want to stay here?”

“I don’t—”

“Or are you scared that if you leave, you’ll never get the chance to tell her how you feel?”

My head snaps in her direction, and I hear my neck crack.

“How I feel?”

Mrs. Owen laughs.

“Oh, darling. You think you’ve been subtle, don’t you? I see how you care for her.”

“I haven’t?” I ask, not bothering to deny the earlier insinuations.

If there’s anyone who can read between the lines without missing a word, it’s Mrs. Owen. Also, I’ve been meaning to tell someone. It’s better for her than anyone else—even Ethan. However, he has an idea already.

“Maybe to others, but not me. I see how you look at her whenever I stop by your cabin or the hospital. You have feelings for the woman, Logan. The question is, what do you plan to do about it?”

Two weeks ago, or three, I might have saidnothing. I would have explained that I’m not the right person to love and Lily… there is a life waiting for her out there.

But I want her in a way that makes rational thinking incomprehensible.

“I don’t know,” I respond. “But I can’t tell her now, knowing that when she gets her memory, there might be valid reasons why we don’t work out. I’m saving myself and Lily from a world of hurt.”

“Are you two going to stand there all day to talk about me?” Doctor Owen asks, and I realize I had completely forgotten about him.

I shake my head. “Of course not. I came to see you. How’s your leg?”

“Could be better,” he says in a grumpy tone.

“That’s my cue to leave,” Mrs. Owen says.
